I ran into this problem on one of my older machines. Strangely the way I wound up 'fixing' it happened on accident I left the windows disc in the machine and didn't hit a key to 'boot from cd/dvd' and it just booted up. It still works like that to this day I just left a old vista disc in the drive.

I'm no expert on the new bootmgr though, you should probably wait for someone else's input.

Thanks I can boot from last known good config but I need to fix it really.

I am dealing with this same issue. The HDD is fine and works well as a slave drive however, it will not function as the master drive. I have tried all the standard procedures to repair using as the C: drive.

I cannot repair or go back to last known configuration.

Hi Lewis
Try booting from the windows 7 disk and when the menu comes up saying install at the bottom left of the page you should see a windows 7 repair button.
Try repairing from that.
