my laptop was getting really laggy and slow so I decided to restart. Then it got stuck on the starting windows screen. Then I tried booting into safe mode but it gets stuck on aswRvrt.sys. then I tried startup repair but then it gets stuck with a black screen with a green loading bar and Microsoft Corporation. I have another laptop but the stuff on this one is really vital for my studies. Thank You

Have you tried system restore?

If that doesn't work, then your only real option is to take the hard drive out, put it in another pc and retrieve your vital data and then re-install windows, either with the built in restore option that most laptops have or with a windows dvd/usb jump drive. Sorry to hear you're having problems.

Thank you for your concern. How can I do system restore by the way. Also does that mean I will lose all my data?

No, system restore will restore your computer to a previous state, usually within the last few week in which it was still running correctly. It should not affect your personal data. When your computer boots(after bios screen) hit f8 and there should be an option in that menu. I can not remember the one offhand, however, I know it is in there somewhere. You may have to go to a repair option of some sort to get to it. What version of windows are you running?

*edit*
you must make sure that you hit f8 before windows starts to boot or you won't get into the menu

okay I'll try that. I pressed f8 and there was no system restore so I chose startup repair because I believe that shows a menu with system restore. Is that correct. Also I'm not on that menu yet. It's still loading the files.

After all that starts up and you select the keyboard thing and put in your username password if you have one, you'll be presented with 5 options. It is the 2nd option called system restore. If there are several restore points to select from. I suggest the 2nd newest one, since that will guarantee that you go back far enough to hopefully pull you out of the situation that you are in now.

I think the hard drive needs replacing since it it says no restore points and it also doesn't recognise one. I'll buy one tomorrow.

I really hate to hear that man. Yeah, a failing hard drive can do all kinds of crazy things. I highly suggest you have someone take out that hd and try and retrieve your data.

click the scale icon between the plus and the triangular warning icon at the top right of each of our posts. Make sure you click the one on one of my posts and not your own. I appreciate it. :) Although I regret to hear about your troubles.

You're more than welcome. I don't do it for points on a forum, I had a little free time and saw your post and knew how to help, so I did. Simple as that. I wish you luck!:geek::D

Hello? Are you still there? I can't thank you enough. I don't know what happened but I tried starting it up and it worked and the everything is fast again. Maybe the startup repair fixed it since after it didn't recognise the drive, it did a memory diagnostic. Thank you so much once again. I really appreciate it.

Hey, since it is running now. Do a search for system restore and make sure that it is turned on and active on your C:. It sounds like it's not on since you didn't have any restore points. Once you turn it on though, make sure you do a restore point right now. That way, if in the future you have a similar problem, you know you'll be able to bring it back from the dead.

It was already on. It just didn't recognise the drive which was why. But I'm backing up the data now.
