Can't capture from my DV camera !

God, I am so angry. Took me all day to configure win7 and install all the applications. Then I've conected my DV camera via FireWire. Windows detected and installed it - I even can see it in devices list.

Anyway, I tried to capture something via Exsate DV Capture Live, which I always used without having any problems on Vista x64, but I get this error: External Exception 800705AA. Ok, I thought maybe it was about that software, so I decided to try to capture something via Windows Live Photo Gallery (that's where the capture feature is). It sees my camera, but when I click on it, it says: The video device is currently in use. Close any other program that is using the device and try again. The thing is, nothing is using that device. I even tried rebooting, but that doesn't help.

Ok, tried with another software - some simple dv capture application. It sees my camera and I can even control my camera via that application (you know: play, pause, rewind etc.), but there's no video on the screen, just black background. Same with Adobe Premiere, which says the device is busy or something like that.

So it's not about software, but it has to do with something in Windows 7.

If anyone knows what's wrong and how to fix it, please help. If there's no solution for this, I will have to install Vista tomorrow morning and I really don't wanna do that as I've fallen in love with Win7 from the first moment. I won't have a choice tho since I use that camera for my work. That's why it's so important.

Anyway, I hope someone will know what's wrong and how to fix it. I would be very, very grateful !

Look in the Photo Gallery folder in Live Movie Maker for "Video Acquire Wizard" which should see your Firewire device once it is turned on.

I have the same exact problem. I think it might have to do with W7 being 64 bit because my 32 bit W7 computer works perfectly (as far as video capture goes).

Ah, it's been so long, so didn't expect to see any reply, but here it is - thanks guys.

Ddowns: the thing is, Photo Gallery sees that device. It just says it's currently in use, but that's not true.

After I made this thread, I did a test. I did re-install Win7 and this time, without installing any software, I tried to connect my camcorder and capture something, but ... nothing happened - no 'import video' popup and, again, that 'device is in use' thingy.

So I got back to Vista (x64) and it's working great.

Nvanlaar: Thanks, that's already something, but x86 version won't work for me as I have 8GB of ram and I need most of it for my work.

Perhaps it has something to do with FireWire x64 drivers, but then again Win7 found all the hardware and installed all drivers, so I thought that was not the case. It even detected my camcorder properly, so it's more like something is blocking it or something.

I really hope they will fix it - otherwise I won't be using Win7. It's just one thing that didn't work, but it was the most important thing for me, so ...

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. 8 GB of ram is a real waste if I have to use 32 bit W7. I really don't want to downgrade to VISTA, but I guess I have to for the time being. Does anyone know where I can file an official bug report? And would it go to the W7 team or the windows Live team? Maybe both?

BTW - this happens with USB as well. The only way I found to get around it is to use XP mode (virtual XP) and installed a 3rd party video capture program (the one that came with the camera). This works fairly well, but is kind of clunky in exucution (ie. open virtual machine then program, connect DV camera and then configuring where the videos get stored).

I saw this post and decided to check my 5 year old canon video camera.

I am running x64 7229. I tried it with windows live photo gallery and and got the device is in use error. I then tried adobe premiere cs4 and it worked. I then retried adobe live photo gallery and it also worked.

Hey. Did you have any luck with this ? Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test the newest builds of Win7, so I'm not sure if they fixed it.

One thing I would try now is to install ieee1394 drivers from win Vista instead of those from Win7. Could you try this, if it's possible of course, and let me know if that worked for you ?

Choose manual and "let me pick", then you will probably see 3 different drivers. Choose the lagacy version. (1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Lagacy))

After that I could capture.

I have to say I've been perplexed with this problem for months now. As a new Public Access TV producer, often I don't even know who to ask for assistance or even how to best describe the problem. I didn't even know that my capture problem was due to a Windows 7 issue! After I was able to capture video on my Vista laptop, I began to realize what the problem was. However, it still wasn't until I installed a few more capture programs and read those error prompts that it led me here. Your response has saved me time and money. Thanks again!

I'm using a 3-port firewire card in my PC. None of the 3 programs that I have installed were recognizing my Panasonic camcorder. BUT, I just figured out that while my Win 7 system will NOT recognize my camera when it is the only thing plugged into my 1394 card, it DOES recognize it when there is something else running through the 1394 card. I actually daisy-chained the camera to a 2nd port on the back of an external, firewire disk drive. The drive need to be running.

Not sure if that will help anyone else or not.
