can't connect anything to USB ports

as soon as i connect anything to the usb port, i get the message
"USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNISED".... i have tried to go back to various restore points but these all fail to complete .... any suggestions please !

Does it happen in safe mode? When did this start? What motherboard do you have?

In safe mode i dont get any recognition that a one of my 2 usb devices below are attatched. Keyboard is usb, as are 2 external hard drives which still work ok. It is only usb devices that i connect then remove that now won't work.
not sure exactly when the problem started, could be over a month ago as i remember seeing a message that a divice is not recognised but the 2 that I usually connect as extras, a Canon G9 camera and various usb sticks still worked. now i can't use these.
Motherboard is Asus P5K
