Solved Can't connect to internet

Awesome! The cause of the problem was doing a hard reset on the Netgear. By default, the Netgear router and your Modem are both set to use the same address (192.168.0.1). They are also both configured to act as a DHCP server by default - which is what is responsible for handing out IP addresses to your computers. You can't have 2 devices with the same IP address or 2 devices acting as a DHCP server.

Put a sticker or mailing label on the Netgear and write 192.168.0.10 on it so you don't forget its address. If you need to get back into the Netgear's setup page, put that address in a web browser. If you ever do a hard reset on the Netgear again, you'll have to turn off DHCP and assign it the 192.168.0.10 IP address as you did above. Better yet, book mark this page! haha.

You should be able to figure out the wireless settings page and add a password to your network. If not, post back.

I've done so much writing, printing of instructions my eyes are crossing. I set both starting and stopping ip range as 192.168.0.100 You had said making stopping at 192.168.0.150. I guess that is OK since it is working good. On that password, tell me how to get into that page, I can probably go from there.

• Open a browser and go to 192.168.0.10 and log in.
• On the left side of the page click the Wireless Settings link near the top.
• SSID: Enter a name for your network
• Security Options: Try using WPA2 AES for the type of security
• Passphrase/Password: Create a password which each computer will need to access the router wirelessly
• Click Apply.

Some of the types of security may or may not be supported by the wireless network card on each computer. Depends how old the network card is. If the above works, you're good to go.

You can also download the manual for your Netgear and go to the wireless setup section for more details.

When you have everything running, you can run a full malwarebytes scan after it updates. Let it remove that rogue link on your desktop.

I am just getting around to setting password
On the wired window seven I went into settings and set password. On the vista It shows about 6 networks avaliable. Mine and one other have a red beside it and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network" One network is unsecured and I can connect to it. The rest show them as secure. I put this XP in my shop and signal strength is low to fare but it still connects good. I need help.

First you want to setup the wireless network on the Netgear. Log into the router and choose the 2nd link from the top (I think) called Wireless settings. Set the fields that I listed in my previous post. This is where you create the network password/passphrase

Next, go to the XP computer and use the Windows built in software. Click the signal strength icon in the lower right to show the available wireless networks then select your network name. Enter the password you created on the Netgear when prompted and see if you connect. Make sure the LAN cable is disconnected so you know you're wireless.

I think I didn't explain right.
I did log in like you said. In security options I had 2 choices, WEP and WPA-PSK, I chose WPA-PSK. The XP computer does get on internet and I know wireless because wired cable not connected. Vista does not get on line. Where it shows avaliable networks, mine is listed but where signal strength is showed there is a red X. If I click properties i get a window that has a lot of settings. I changed some of them even though I didn't know what to put in, it didn't help. On the wired computer I was going to log back into Netgear several times and got message username and password is wrong. Then I put in admin for username and password for password and I got in. Thought I would have had to use the new password I created, guess not. My SSID I set is Netgear. The 2 networks I am getting with redX are Netgear and Netgear2. I think?? Netgear2 was the name of network I had been logging on before I set password. I am wondering if both are in my computer confusing it? Don't remember if the XP has both listed or not.

How bad am I confusing you?

When you log into the Netgear router thru a web browser, there is a user name/pw to access the setup pages. That log in is separate and different from your wireless network settings & pw that you create.

You shouldn't need to change anything on the computers. The Netgear is like your radio station, the computer is just your radio - you choose the station you want to connect to in the list of available networks on each PC.

Do the Win7 & Vista computers have a wireless network card in them?

If you set the wireless network name in the Netgear to something unique like LDJ, you'll be sure you aren't connecting to a neighbors network. You may have a dual band router which broadcasts 2 different networks at once. I'm not sure. If you do, you'll have a place to assign 2 network names in the Netgear wireless settings page. You could call them LDJ1 & LDJ2. You'll need a good reception signal on the computers as well. You should see at least 2 bars.

I went back into netgear router and set unsecured. Went back to vista and now it shows netgear2 with good signal and no red X. and I can get internet.
Still shows Netgear with RedX. In the box for SSID I have Netgear as name but am connection with Netgear2

I changed network name and Vista now works.
Now both netgear and netgear2 are both shown as availiable networks. One still has red X. Do you think those are someone elses? Don't under stand why XP was working before name change but not vista. Now I hope the XP will work with the new name but not going out to check tonight.

BTW we love Boston Terrier dogs so new network name is bt1

It sounds like you have a dual band router. So when you set the name as Netgear, it automatically adds Netgear2 as the 2nd channel. They're just 2 different frequencies and should both be yours.... I'd have to check the manual. As long as you have a password on the wireless network, you should be all set. You can only connect to one wireless network at a time anyway.

Show the list of available networks on the XP computer and connect to either BT name you can. If only one of the network names works on XP, that's fine.

The Xp says similar, I didn't write it down exactly I think it said acquiring. However it also said connected
On both I ping google.com and got message ping request could not find host google

On both when trying to get in internet it came up with page can not be found. What is different from before about getting the page not found message is it really didn't try long. After trying it almost instantly gave that message

Start with XP and leave the Vista & 7 computers alone for now. Do not use the Wireless Network setup wizard on any of the computers.

• On XP, go to Control Panel, Wireless Networks. Click the link on the left - Manage wireless networks. Right click and delete any stored wireless profiles for BT, Netgear, etc. You can also change the order in which Windows will try and connect to a preferred network.
• Click the list of available wireless networks, find one of your network names then connect. It should ask you for your password again. Enter it and see if you connect. You won't get internet access until you successfully connect to the router.
• Go to Netgear's website, put in the model of your router and download the user manual. Take a look at the section on Manually setting up your Wireless Network, maybe there's something in there that will make it clearer.

I decided to log to router 198.168.0.10 and remove security to see what happened. It times out says page not found. I can't log to router.

You have to have a successful connection to the router before you can log into its setup page. Connect to the router with a network cable and you'll be able to log into the setup page.

What times out on the windows 7 computer? Opening 192.168.0.10 in a browser? If the Win7 compute has internet access you should be able to get into the Netgear setup page.

Close all open web browsers. Go into Network & Sharing in Control Panel. Unplug the network cable on the Win 7 computer for a few seconds then plug it back in. You should see the network map trying to connect.

Remember that you are no longer using the WAN port on the Netgear (the single port by itself). All Wired connections go into the 4 LAN ports.

Yes opening 192.168.0.10 in the browser times out. I closed all browser windows and in Network and sharing it shows This computer-------network2-------internet. I unpluged cable and network Xed out, after 20 seconds or so I plugged and it showed as before. Vista will get on line now, haven't tried the XP,

BYW, this computer, about half the time when going to a web page, it times out and you have to try from 2 to 5 or 6 times for it to work. That just started this morning. Just again tried 192.168.0.10 in web browser, still times out

Unplug the power cord to the Netgear for 10 secs. then plug is back in. If Vista gets online, use that computer to access the Netgear setup page.

You can use the ping command to test for a connection from any computer to the router or internet. If you type ping 192.168.0.10 at a command prompt, 0% loss means that computer can see the Netgear device.
