Had a previous connection for backup of PC2 to USB drive on PC1 but when I resized the usb partition being used...I had to delete and recreate the share on my PC1 & PC2.

Now I can not get the PC2 to connect for the weekly backup oepration.

These are both Win 7 Pro machines..The share shows up on PC2...but I get the following errors when trying to set up the weekly backup on the PC2 to the USB drive on the PC1 ? (permmisonerrorsPC2.jpg)

Can open and read the folders from PC2 to PC1..but can't re-setup the Backup on PC2 t0 the USB on PC1 ? (mypermissionPC1)

What am I doing wrong on permissions here ?

Thanks...TR

I think you have the sharing permissions correct but you may also need to go into the "Security" tab and set the permissions to "Everyone" in there also.

I'm pretty sure that just going into the drives settings and allowing access should allow access from all of your networked machines.

yep...changing security on PC1 did the trick ! Thanks

One more question on this...From a security point of view on a home network setup...would it be better to set up a separate individual "user" for this backup operation than leaving the settings to "everyone"

Keep in mind I have little understandings of the workings of security and/or permissions...just that will leaving it at everyone for this singe operation for PC2 to PC1 backup only be any different than setting up a user account for the backup operation for PC2's access to PC1 with the USB drive?

Thanks afgain...TR

Ok good, I have posted the Security tab settings to access the root of a drive dozens of times, seems to work everytime. ;)

As for the Everyone security option.

It would be safer to allow just the one User access to the drive no doubt, but you might need to create a seperate standard User account on the machine you need to access the drive from in order to see the "Users Name" to give them permissions. Kind of a pain but it can be done.
