I bought a new PC and it can't connect to the internet. I'm using windows 7 and the usb adaptor I had on my old PC doesn't work with win 7 x64. I have a LAN cable which does work but windows still can't see my router.

Can anyone help?

I'm a bit confused. You said "I have a LAN cable which does work but windows still can't see my router".

How do you know the LAN cable works if you can't see the router? Have you plugged the cable directly into the broadband modem, bypassing the router?

You also mentioned a USB adapter that does not work with Win 7 so I'm guessing you meant a USB Wireless adapter. Is the problem that there is no Win 7 driver available for it? If so, have you checked to see if there is a Vista driver available. Most of the time that will work with Win 7. Provide the make and model number of the USB adapter and we may be able to help.

I had to install the gigabyte utilities on the disk. Stupid I know but I would have though Windows 7 would have allowed for Ethernet ports to work.

But when I installed Windows 7 on my laptop I didn't have to install any other forms of utilities, everything worked perfectly there and then. So I guess desktops are different.

Windows 7 has most every driver you can imagine included with the Op system although there are certain drivers that weren't made in time to get on the actual final OP system CD release. I havn't installed one system that Win7 didn't already have the drivers included but there are execptions to this as you found out.

Because of this it is required sometimes that you use the drivers from the CD or go to the manufacture's site to obtain the latest driver versions.
