Can't defrag DATA (D) drive?

Opened Disk Defragmenter. DATA (D) is showing 21% fragmented. However when I highlight this drive, it is only highlighted for about a second and I can't get this drive to be degragged. I can defrag the OS (C) drive, though. What's up.

Have you got a scheduled defrag set up on the drive? If not, set one up and see if it runs.

IMO, we should try helping him fix this rather than suggesting a 3rd party option.

I think there is no fix required if that is the recovery partition. There is absolutely no performance issue since he may never use that partition anyhow.
If, however, that is a data partition, then it is another story. That's why I was first trying to find out what's in the partition.

I actually prefer a picture of the opened partitions. In WinDirStat, you cannot see the folders. Plus, it is more difficult to properly use.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Opened DATA (D). 27 items, mostly: "eula" files and "install.res....dll" files (Application extension), Recycle Bin, VC_RED (winzip file), VC_RED (Windows Installer), vcredist (bitmap). As all have the date of modification (11/7/2007 - upgraded from Vista to W7 about 6 months ago), probably came with upgrade?

That looks like the Vista recovery partition that was left from your old installation. Unless you want to ever go back to Vista, I would delete the whole bit.

Hope you don't mind, but before deleting the DATA (D) folder, I would like to make sure that it is Vista and doesn't have anything that W7 might need. Here's a snapshot:

It is hard to tell from the file names themselves. But since they all date from 2007, they cannot be from /7. The bin and the volume info is special anyhow.
If you like, you can keep them. But a defrag is really not in order.

I've deleted everything except The Recycle Bin and the System Volume Information (wouldn't allow access to this folder). Of course, I'll hold the deletions in the Recycle Bin for a while to make sure nothing goes screwy.
