Can't enable hibernation - access denied

I'm trying to re-enable hibernation. When I try, using powercfg. - on I get "The following items are preventing hibernation on this system. The system could not create the hibernation file. the specific error code is 0xc0000034.

Looking up this code, I learn that access is denied while trying to create the hiberfile.sys file on the C:\ root.

Why? I've tried running it both as my regular logon, and as the Administrator. I'm doing a Run As Administrator in the cmd shell.

Permissions are set on the C drive to allow full access to the administrator.

I can find no reason why it can't create that file.

Any suggestion would be helpful.

Roger

Have you tried enabling it in safe mode? Maybe the old Hibernation file is being locked by a backup program.

First Step would be to boot into safe mode and try to delete the old hibernation file (if it exists) if it does..
Second step would be to reboot normally and try to enable hibernation (make sure you have enough disk space) if it doesn't exist try and enable it while still in safe mode.

I bet your right, I have herd of a similar case before and removing the old file in safe mode corrected the problem.

Worked previously

Yes, hibernation worked fine previously. Also, the hiberfil.sys file is not on the drive. I already checked that. I believe I removed it when I disabled it (trying to free the unmovable blocks for a shrink process).

I didn't think to try it from safe mode. Good idea.

Unfortunately I've since re-built the system from an image I made before I had turned off hibernation. Sorry I can't report whether your idea was a success or not.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe a 3rd party power manager is installed?

I usually have this problem after a bad restart or something similar. I'm trying to remember what I did and I'll be back :p

EDIT: Alright, I think I did something like this:

Open a command prompt as administrator. Entries with // after them are comments and don't input them. Input:

Code:
dir C:\

echo > hiberfil.sys  [COLOR=red]//a hiberfil should be created[/COLOR]

[COLOR=black]powercfg -h on [/COLOR][COLOR=red]//you should receive the same error[/COLOR]

[COLOR=#000000]powercfg -h off [/COLOR][COLOR=red]//expect same error[/COLOR]

[COLOR=#000000]del hiberfil.sys[/COLOR]

[COLOR=#000000]powercfg -h on [/COLOR][COLOR=red]//expect same error[/COLOR]

Restart your computer afterwards. It should work.

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately I can't report on its failure or success, as I have since restored from an image and fixed it that way.

I can tell you that I was running the cmd from the Run As Administrator mode.

Right click on cmd and select run as administrator. It should work. ( start - type cmd - right click - select run as administrator)

i had the same problem and this worked for me.

i am stunned about this though. i use an administrator account, and i thought if i run anything by clicking it is already run as administrator. so why does that make a difference, why does your suggestion work?

worked for me

I had disabled hibernation with powercfg -h off, restarted and could not re-enable it with elevated comm prompt

got an error like the OP but this method worked (see arkhi post on previous page).

Gotta see if I can find a way to purge the hibernate file when I want without going through this
