Cant get HIS Radeon HD 5870 to work

Hi I installed windows 7 two day ago and everything has worked fine, but not with the video card. First of all it keeps running its fan at what seems to me like max rpm, witch is annoying in itself, but in addition I cant start any games at all!

It almost seems like windows doesnt recognize the card. Or the motherboard doesnt, I dont know.

What kan the problem be??

Did you install drivers for your graphics cards? Then reboot and install updates and such?

With the graphics card can you connect dvi/vga and see Windows up but at a small resolution like 800x 600 and such?

I have installed the drivers, as I can run windows in 1920x1080 resoloution.
Everything works fine only apart from when one try to start games.
"application errror" is what I get.

I also get an "application error" when I try to configure 3D settings in the ATI catalyst center and video playback.

The asus motherboard has an integrated graphics processor (IGP)... I don't know where to change it in the BIOS though.

Edit: the IGP is the onboard graphics that Pizzaman was referring to

Hmm, I dont want to tell you the wrong thing and you mess up your BIOS, I will let someone else handle walking you through the BIOS. I think it is in the Integrated Peripherals section. and there is an IGP on your board: Integrated ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 GPU ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

In the bios go to the Advanced tab and under that select Chipset. From there select RS780 Configuration and set "Internal Graphics Mode [UMA] to disabled.

P.S. With this board or any other AMD board with onboard graphics it doesn't make any difference whether it is disabled or not. In fact in that section there is also the Surround view option that when an ATI card is used in conjunction with the onboard HD 3200 (applies to all of them) allows you to use up to four monitors. And yes I have the exact same motherboard and have used the onboard with my 4830 on numerous occasions, with the only thing that happens is I lose 256 MB of my 4 GB of ram when I enable it.

One thing to try and see if it helps, go here,

select Motherboard/Integrated, then click on Individual Drivers (motherboard/chipset), select your OS and grab the Southbridge driver. Once that is installed then try installing the Cat 10.2 again.

I tried the two things stormy13 suggested with little luck. When disabeling "internal Graphics mode" I just got a black screen, so I had to clear the RTC RAM with the jumper on my motherboard. Furthermore the southbridge driver suggested didnt do the trick either...

But it is true as you (stormy13) say that the system uses the Integrated ATI Radeon™ [COLOR=#0072BC ! important][COLOR=#0072BC ! important]HD[/COLOR][/COLOR] 3200 GPU, and not the graphic card mounted on the PCI Express slot, so the problem seems to be that the motherboard doesnt detect the graphic card for some reason....

Any more suggestions?

From the sounds of it you have the monitor connected to the onboard video, even more so when you say you lose all display once the onboard is disabled. If so, might want to connect it to the card instead.

Install DirectX9.0 from MS site
Download details: DirectX Redist (February 2010)
Most games still use DirectX9.0

ok so I ran down to the store to buy a HDMI cable for the graphic card, turned off the internal graphic mode, but it still doesnt work. Black screen again. So I had to reset the jumper on my motherboard a second time.

However Yowantista`s tip of installing directX9 actually worked! I can now play the games that I like, even though it still seems that the graphic card isnt totally in order. I still have to use the inputs in the motherboard and not the graphic card (and the fan on the graphic card is still going on 100% rpm)

I tried that now, and it is the onboard graphics who is running both in games and i windows, so the graphic card isnt operational at all

The card doesnt have a DVI or VGA port, but a HDMI, and two others who look soemwhat similar to DVI but not quite.

There also wasnt any cables connected to any of the other ports when I tried to boot without the internal graphic mode


Another wierd thing was when I tried to press the graphic card further down in its socket and turned on the computer, the fan ran quiter but then even if I ran it in Internal graphic mode I couldnt get any image on the screen at all so I had to erase RTC RAM several times to get back the image

if so it does have 2 DVI ports, as well as a HDMI port and a displayport,



the two long ports beside each other are the DVI ports.

Also did you remember to connect the two 2x6 pin power connectors on the card to the power supply?

PS: The soloution was as simple as they often are. The Graphic card wasnt pushed firmly enough down in the PCI express slot. That was all

I'm glad that you have resolved your problem. Just make sure that everything is connected correctly, that the brackets are securely fastened to the case and that the retaining clip on the motherboard slot is engaged to lock the card firmly in place.

And now that you have the card working, if you ever decide to run more than two monitors you can just enable the onboard video and the Surround View option (as long as the card is also from ATI, and which works very well).
