Can't Get Into Safe Mode

I have a Toshiba laptop. Yesterday when I tried to log in, I got the message:

'User profile service service failed the log on. User profile can not be loaded'.

I read the tutorial given on this site, but it assumes that I can log in in Safe mode. My laptop has a key Fn that has to be pressed in order to activate Function keys; even when I press Fn and F8, it does me no good; I still can't log in in Safe mode.

I am feeling desperate. I am in the middle of an online course and really need my laptop.
