Bingo-----while you were sleeping, I may have found the problem. While I was checking on the Direct X version, I also ran the DX diagnosis and it showed--no sound card onboard. Soooo, having experienced sporadic sound outages previously, I shut down, pulled the power cord and did some digging around the MB. Reset the front speaker leads and generally did some light tapping anound the S/PDIF outputs of the MB. Then I restarted and knew instantly that the drivers were going to load---and load they did---all in their correct places in DM and CP and in the sound panel. All is well now, but I may have a more sinister problem with my onboard sound.
Guess that would mean adding a sound card.
But, it is over and I thank all who were so very helpful.
