I've been asked to help a friend with a Windows 7 computer. The aim is to install SP1 so he can move to Windows 10.

SP1 update will not complete and terminates with the following message:
Installation was not successful
The referenced assembly could not be found
error_sxs_assembly_missing(0X80073701)

After running the MS windows update readiness tool:

- same result

Windows update troubleshooter didn't help.

Running sfc/ scannow gave the following result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th em.

and the long log file included:

corrupted file [ml:60{30},l:58{29}]"\??\C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US"\[l:28{14}]"iassdo.dll.mui"; source file in store is also corrupted.

Googling this brought up an opinion that this indicates the installation is non legit.

Running MGAdiag.exe gives the result shown below. Does this shed any light on the problem?

You are correct the install is counterfeit.
You have a HP product I.D. on a Packard Bell/Acer computer.

<Manufacturer>Packard Bell BV</Manufacturer><Model>
Windows Product ID: 00426-OEM-8992662-00010

Win 7,Ultimate,HP,XXXXX-OEM-8992662-00010

You have a OEM_SLP channel Date>20080910000000.000000+000</Date></BIOS>
Windows 7 didn't even come out until 2009.

Your friend needs to buy Windows 7 with the proper legal COA key and do a Clean Install.
Be very careful where Windows 7 is bought. Their are a lot of counterfeits being sold.
Stay off of eBay looking for Windows 7.
I buy my Windows 7 from a local retailer.

Thankyou for your response. I think you are correct, however;

The computer had Vista on and he had it upgraded to W7 by a friendly helpful chap from the local computer shop, so not a clean install - could that explain the 2008 date?

You say the Product ID relates to another make of computer - to HP: Can a Windows OS not be legitimately used on another make of computer?

I note that MGAdiag results do not give the full product key, but the product ID and the part of the key given match a list of product IDs with matching product keys given online (under the heading Crack and Cheat The Net - hmm)

I have just learned also that he paid just £50 all in for the "upgrade" from Vista to this apparently cracked version of W7 - so not sure what he expected for that and not happy I've wasted so much time trying to install the update.

You suggest buying W7 instead of W10 - is that a cheaper route to W10?

You can buy either one. I think the prices are about the same. You just must be careful where you buy them so you don't get a counterfeit.
