I've recently done a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and am going through installing the software. I've got to MS Word Viewer and it's throwing up error 1406 repeatedly, saying it can't write to Software\Microsoft\11.0\Common\

That key does exist under Current_User but the only thing under it is a key "PersonalMenu", none of the things that the installer is trying to write (LanguageResources, General, etc).

I found this You receive an error message when you install an Office program or open an Office program or document but I don't even have a C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Office let alone anything below it.

Hi

No, I've only recently re-installed Windows and don't think I've run into this problem before, nor am I having any other problems. I'm using Avast antivirus.

Hi

Wow, my memory's worse than I thought!

Anyway, as I say I have re-installed Windows from scratch and I'm not having any other issues, so this seems to be a problem specific to the Word Viewer installer.

Are you installing from an administrator user? This sounds like a permissions issue. You might try installing from a clean start to see if it a 3rd party program preventing the install.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

If you still get the same error, you can either try installing from the hidden Administrator account

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html

Or you will have to look at the permissions of the reg keys that are showing as the cause during installation.

Yep, I'm using an administrator user account.

I'm not sure which key it's trying to write as there's both

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\

The CU key exists up to Common. The LM key ends at Office, with an Outlook subkey/folder.

Checking permissions on the latter (right-clicking on Office), it shows:

Creator Owner - Special
SYSTEM - Full Control + Read
Administrators - Full Control + Read
Users - Read

The user I'm operating with is in the Administrators group.

Checking permissions on the CU key (right-clicking on Common):

RESTRICTED - Read
SYSTEM - Full Control + Read
Ste - Full Control + Read
Administrators - Full Control + Read

Ste is the administrator user I'm operating with.

I tried adding Full Control permissions for Everyone to both CU\Software\Microsoft\Office and LM\Software\Microsoft\Office but was still getting the same errors when trying to install it.

I just uninstalled Avast though, to diagnose boot delays and now WordView has installed OK. I guess it was connected, even though I did try disabling Avast completely before.

It's often hard to completely shut an AV off. Glad you got it sorted, however it happened ;)

Yeah, I only uninstalled Avast as it seemed to be slowing down booting (someone else analysed the boot trace for me and said it showed a Queue of 149, which is apparently bad!). I haven't had a chance to test if that has made much difference yet but at least it got Wordviewer installed ;)

Thanks for your help guys :)
