I have installed Windows Mail into Win 7. But I cannot open any .eml files. That extension is not included in my file associations options. And Windows Mail is not offerred as a default email program. How can I make these things happen?

Are you talking about Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail? If the former, download WLM. It is the newest version and should solve your problem.

Save all your important email then go to this site and download the newest version.

Essentials - Windows Live

I think that you are having the problem because you do not have the newest version of Mail, for windows 7

Is there an update available for Windows Mail? I'm talking about the version that came in Vista, not some new permutation. I would very much like to stick to Windows Mail (Vista version), but I also want to be able to open an .eml file. Any help out there?

You will need to download "Windows Live Email". There is no update on Windows 7 for "Windows Mail" (from Vista). you can then choose to open .eml with --->
Windows Live Mail E-Mail Message (.eml). Set it as 'default'

Isn't that guy who teaches us how to bring in the window mail from Vista to be used in windows 7 rather smart?

At the moment, when you click the eml file in your windows explorer, a menu with 'open with' will appear, only by clicking windows live mail, will enable you to preview your email saved in your windows explorer.
Alternatively, windows 7 has an obscure icon on the top right corner of the explorer menu that lets you preview your files, so you needn't open any program to read your saved emails.
hope it helps.

I have Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail. I can access my messages fine using WLM both from the header list and from the "find" selection. But with WLM running, if I go into the the WLM message store files with Windows explorer and try to open individual eml files it doesn't work anymore after another big WLM problem.

I get a message "Windows Live Mail could not be started because another instance of it is still running on your computer", and sure enough, Task Manager Processes shows another wlmail.exe *32 process running. When WLM is not running, and I try to open an eml file from Windows Explorer, WLM tries to start and wlmail.exe *32 appears on the Task Manager Process list, but it never opens or appears on the Task Manager Applications list. I have made WLM a default program and it's listed as the program associated with eml files. Windows Xp had more parameters to be set when you associated a program with a filetype. If this is done automatically in Windows 7, could this have gotten fouled up?

My wife's Windows 7 and WLM laptop can have WLM running and open an eml message from Windows Explorer, and the Task Manager Process list shows no duplicate wlmail.exe *32 listing.

I would try a repair of WLM, go to Add or Remove Programs in control panel, select Windows Live Essentials from program list and you will be given a choice of repair or uninstall. To be on the safe side I would backup al contacts and mail before doing this.
