Can't open file because its already running 2003 Access [Solved]

Hi guys.

I've searched for this problem but I haven't seen a good solution.

I've had a new problem which has developed over the past week. I use MS Office 2003 because it does exactly what I want it to do. I hate the newer Office 2007/2010 because everything is pictures and the database doesn't have the same layout.

I have Office 2003 on my Windows XP main computer. If I change any info I copy and paste the mdb file back to my laptop. When I try and open this file it says file is already in use by another computer.

I check Task Manager and its not open. I have to restart the laptop then it opens. I've copied and pasted files for years without any problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know if its related but for the past 7-10 days my Windows XP SP3.

I have a 1b0110ce97b735b1b2f26448/update folder on Windows XP.

I know these are temp folders to install updates. When I try and delete this folder it says the file(s) are in use.

There are 9 files in this folder. kmdfcustom.dll, update.exe, update.ver, update_srv2k3.inf, update_win2k.inf, update_winxp.inf, updatebr.inf, updspapi.dll, wdf01009.cat

When I run update.exe it shows Microsoft Kernel-Mode Driver Framework Feature 1.9. I click Next and it says:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...or-windows-vista,-and-for-windows-server-2008

You have successfully completed the Wdf102009 Setup Wizard, click Finish.

On Windows XP you can't check which updates have been installed as with Windows 7.

I restart and I still can't delete this temp folder because it says its in use. I run Process Explorer and kmdfcustom.dll isn't listed. Or any files in Task Manager.

Did you try compacting and repairing the database before closing and copying? (Had to ask.)

Have you tried saving it as a backup then moving the backup to open?

Thanks for the reply GEWB.

I use a lot of database Jet 4.0 C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\DAO\Dao360.dll v3.60.9756.0 Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library in my apps. In settings its set to compact on exit its not easy to repair newer databases. I had a repair function on my old databases.

This problem only shows on 1 database, all other databases copy over and open.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/239114

I copied the database to another folder but it still won't open as it says it in use. I have to restart my laptop then it opens. The strange thing is why it opens after a restart when its the same file?

Hmm, thinking out loud...have you tried opening the file without enabling macros? Umm, are you opening the file using the same user role?

Maybe check the .lbd file. As far as I know it shouldn't exist if no user has opened the database. Since you get a message that the database is in use I'd be inclined to check for the presence of an .ldb file.

With no database open there should not be an .ldb file. If you can see one then there is a problem. I reckon you will have to figure out how to delete the .ldb file then compact and repair all databases.

I know the ldb file is created when the database opens and its deleted when its closed. I don't see how the ldb file is a problem.

Okay did you try launching Access from the shortcut or executable then use File > Open then browse to the .mdb file but don't actually open it. If the "Open" dialog box there should be a drop down arrow that lets you choose to "Open Exclusive" or "Open Exclusive Read-Only" - See if that works.

Both "Open Exclusive" or "Open Exclusive Read-Only" both open, I've use Open Exclusive if I want to set a password.

I never use Read-Only as I always modify the database. As I've said this problem only happens when I copy the database from Windows XP back to my Windows 7 laptop. I have to restart the laptop before it will open.

Have you tried to run it in XP Compatibility Mode on your Windows 7 laptop. It seems from what you have said that the Win 7 laptop is not recognising the data.

Do you have Office 2003 installed on both computers, if so, do they have separate Office licenses.

What method are you using for copying the Access data from one to the other. Do you use an update query or do you just append the copied data directly to the main table.

I copy and paste the database over from Windows XP to my Windows 7 laptop.

I check all Windows updates daily.

I copy and paste into Google just to check what its about. I also have https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx to check any KB number updates.

I've uninstalled a couple of updates and done a restart.

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites (KB3127945) Installation date: 15/03/2017 16:39 uninstalled

Even though it doesn't show in Control Panel Installed Updates.

I copy every Windows update into a text file for quick reference. The stupid thing is it pastes the date info has

Okay well I'm pretty much out of ideas. Those updates show in windows update history because history shows when you installed updates - not when you uninstalled them. They updates should not show up in the installed updates list which is different to history list.

RE: Copying database. Did you copy the .mdb file or perhaps an entire folder containing the file?
