Hi,

I have followed everything i have read. Check the ease of access box wasn't ticked, checked the high contrast option.

I can change the background to another solid colour, blue red etc. Another issues i have noitced is when i go to the desktop background choices, go to picture location and click windows desktop backgrounds, (brings up the list of photos) but i don't see any pictures just empty white boxes. If i right click and open i see the photo perfectly but if i set to background i get the solid colour.

Also if i go to my photo library i (with my thumbnails set to large icons) see i icons as the empty white boxes, pictures also the same. i can change to small icons and i see the pictures as thumbnails.

Things i ve tried - new graphics drivers, folder options, and a few registry keys that have been mentioned in other posts.

Hope someone can help.

Plus the half-life 2 engine keeps crashing started at the same time. (tried deleting no difference)

I have the exact same problem and found only a partial solution. As for the icons/thumbnails, I did the same as you- if you make them smaller you can see them, but you don't have this option for the background pictures and they show up as white boxes

however, i found a weird way to be able to change your background image (i only get solid colors as well). if you go online and use an image from the web (you can even google "windows 7 background images" if you like those) and right click and select set as background image, that DOES change the background for some weird reason. another strange thing- this only works in mozilla firefox and internet explorer, but Not for google chrome. on IE you can set a picture as the background, and on firefox you can set an image and choose between center, tile, or strech options.

this isn't ideal, but at least this way you can have a background picture that isn't a solid color. hopefully someone comes up with a more permanent solution.

also you can open a picture file from your computer that you want as your background with a browser and then right click and set as background. firefox works esp. well with this

Hi Chris and Falcon !! Welcome to the forums :D

@ Falcon : Nice suggestions :geek:

@ Chris : Is it the situation from the very beginning , or a recent scenario ? If recent , have you ran any third party disk cum registry cleaner before getting into this trouble ?

Initially yo may try one thing , that is http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html . It will bring everything to system default .

If SFC scan failed , it is to try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html with a previous date before the trouble came . And if System restore is also failed , finally it is to try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html .

Please post back the results .
