can't shut down

I can't shut down my netbook normally using the shut down button, and I really need to shut it down..

sorry but it's kind of urgent

My guess is some app is preventing the shutdown. Try creating a shortcut that will close any programs without warning and force a shutdown.

Right click the desktop, New, Shortcut, then type:

Shutdown -f

Double click on the shortcut to shutdown.

If it's urgent you can force it to shutdown by holding the power button down for about 10 seconds. When you can run the disk cleanup utility and check disk. That straightens out many problems.

Thanks.. Yeah in the end I just held the power button for a few seconds

I didn't know how to run disk cleanup so I just booted normaly but it did come up with that Windows Error Screen so yeah, but I think it's just one thing that just happened once..

I'll see once I need to shut down again urgently

FYI open "Computer", right-click on C: and select Properties. On the first tab you will see a button for disk cleanup. There is also a "tools" tab where you can select "check disk" and "defrag". Before running check disk put a tick in the box that says "automatically fix file system errors". Say yes when it asks if you want to run check disk at the next boot. I suggest doing this maintenance sometime when it's convenient - don't wait until the next time the system is misbehaving. Hope this helps!

One thing I'v noticed is after booting again normally, I'm now able to access the ctrl alt dlt screen thing which I wasn't when trying to shut down like phase before

Weird.

If you cannot shut down, advice: hold power button then when trying to power on again, hold button again (I couldn't just press it to go on) then go through the normally booting bit then when you go on your normal screen ctrl alt dlt and if it works I'm guessing it's just okay now.

Wait! I suspect there is no problem at all but the default function for the button is simply set to "4 second delay" (or something similar) in the BIOS Setup Menu. This setting requires the button be pressed for 4 seconds. You can typically change the function to "reset", "sleep", "hibernate", or "instant off" - depending on the BIOS options.

BUT, my biggest concern is that you should be going through the Start button to perform a "graceful" shutdown where all files are "properly" closed, Windows exits and then, and only then, is power removed. Are you not able to shutdown that way?

Yeah, That is what I always do but now I have to hold the power button.

I click on the shut down button, nothing happens.

Usually since I have a few gadgets they would dissapear and i know I'd be shutting down but since that never happened, nothing did.
