Can't Upgrade Windows 7 to 10 because of small Reserved Partition

I have problem with upgrade of windows 7. Can't do this beause reserved partion has 30MB (ACTIVE,SYSTEM), C: is Boot. First time i see such strange configuration. I can't extend reserved partition any of tools. What can i do?

Welcome to the forums. You can use disk Management and either delete it then move c left or you can shrink c a bit then move it right and then you can grow it or use partitioning software it's simpler

I have three win 7 laptops here and they're all using 36 MB on the system partition. I'm confused? Try using either:

When i choose extend system partition it see only C: partition not this reserved. When i click directly on this partition i can't extend it.
I had a 4-5 laptops in my hands with win 7 and there always was 100MB partition at least.

Are you saying that it won't allow you to upgrade the computer because of the 30mb partition? Also, are you saying that the 30mb partition is the active/system partition, or are you saying that C: is the active/system partition?

It is normal to have a reserved partition at the beginning of the drive - this is typically where the Factory Reset files are stored. If this is the Factory Reset partition, then it would be a good idea to keep it, so that in the future you can restore the original condition of the laptop if necessary.

I have never heard of this partition preventing someone from upgrading from 7 to 10.

That is helpful information. I didn't realize that the system partition might be full, and that making it a little bigger could solve this problem. I'd probably use the EaseUS tools and do both of the fixes that EaseUS recommends.

Win 10 isn't better than Win 7 and you can regret of doing the "upgrade".
Use your Win 7 to build the Factory recover disks.
Once you have the Factory recover disks you can delete the Recovery partition and expand the System partition.

Windows 7 is designed to operate with a system partition of 100MB although this is more than is needed, so it is sometimes reduced As Windows 10 uses the system reserved partition for a lot more tools that Windows 7 did it requires a system partition of 450MB +

From your map I would suggest you use the Dell software to create recovery disks / Thumbdrive if you have not already done so

Next use partition wizard to remove the recovery partition
Upgrade win7 to Win10 and the system partition will be expanded as needed automatically, (using the free space created by deleting the recovery partition) after everything is finished and installed you can if you wish use partition Wizard to Move/Expand the C: drive to fill the free space.

If you decide on a fresh install of Win10 then there is a drive options sub menu during install that allows you to clear all partitions and create those needed automatically, (NOTE THIS OPTION WILL DELETE ALL PERSONAL FILES AND INSTALLED PROGRAMS), which will provide the most stable install, but requires backup and restoration of files and reinstallation of programs

Hi All,
After some time I did a workaround on one computer. I used Recovery CD to install Win7 once again and then upgrade to Win10. That solution works. But i wanted to save all data and profiles so i tried with 3 party solutions. I try one more time with minitool and it start to work. I don't know how because i tried it before! I will confirm it on third laptop!

You can also use easy bcd to copy the 100mb system reserved to the C partition and after delete the little bugger completely

I'd also make a system image before you upgrade so if it fails..... at least you have something to fall back on to start over.

A partition can be extended into contiguous free space.

You would need to shrink C from the right to create that.

It can be done from outside windows, using boot media.

Probably simplest is to make C the active, system partition. Then delete the 30mb part.

There is one way that u can do that and that's by reinstalling windows 7 after u hv gone to boot than u should go to costum intallation and format the drive.Sure u should bckup files.Tyen after having clean drive try again intalling windows 10.
