I have recently inherited – literally, as my brother unfortunately died – a Windows 7 machine which appears to be a home/small trader build. There is no badging and Belarc identifies it only as an “Asus All Series”. Ominously, perhaps, there is no COA but it has Windows 7 Home Premium as OS which does download and install Windows Updates. As my brother lived several hundred miles away we rarely met and I know nothing of the history of the machine, but it does appear to work well.

I thought it would be good to try Windows 10 on it before I install that on my main machine but I am being told by the install programme that current OS is not activated so it will not install. However, if I right click Computer/properties this says that the OS is activated, which is what is really puzzling me.
It does not appear to have downloaded the Get Windows 10 update as the flag does not show in the task bar and I had to find the downloads myself.

If anyone has any thoughts on this I would be grateful. Has my brother been “sold a pup” (as far as I know he did not have the skills to self-build)? (If it makes any difference I’m in the UK so would need UK details if I need to contact Microsoft).

Sorry to say, Yep it is a pup.
Although its partially activated, it wont go any further.
You have an Asus but with a different manufacturers motherboard, American Megatrends.
The type of licence on the comp, OEM, can only be genuine if both match, and the OS (W7) was installed when built at their factory.
There are indications that an exploit tamper has been used.

MS will just tell you to buy a genuine Version of 10, as they will consider yours as a counterfiet installation.

I’m quite prepared to accept that it is a “pup”. However, I am puzzled by your comments about the motherboard as it actually physically (paintwork) identifies itself as an Asus B85M-G on the board. Belarc says the same, with the serial number as 131118967300199. Is all this evidence of the “tamper” that you talk of. (Belarc says UEFI: American Megatrends Inc. 0703 10/30/2013, whereas on mine the heading is “Bios”.
One of the reasons I was suspicious was that there was an (opened) W 7 HomePrem. disc also in my brother’s effects with a different licence key (and the COA sticker still on the packaging). Would it possibly be worth reinstalling W7 with this or would I risk losing completely what is currently a working machine? I assume there is no way that MS allow you to check the status of licence keys ……..??

OEM -- System Builder or
RETAIL.
Thats a whole different kettle of fish

Regarding the motherboard -- Although branded ASUS its one of thier Standalone (retail) type, hence the different BIOS, which will not (likely) be found on a standard off-the-shelf type product you'd buy from Currys etc.
The two types of licence i mentioned above are specifically for this type of build

On the report you supplied there are 2 major indications of a non genuine install,
No slic table, which would be present for a standard off the shelf comps
The file mismatch shown on systemcpl.dll, which forms part of the validation process

Once again I am in your debt for your patience!
The outer packaging (all packaging is card) says that “The software is intended for pre-installation on the hard drive of the fully assembled computer system, using the pre-installation tools”. The COA label says “Windows 7 Home Prem LCP for OEM software” .
There is nothing on the machine that I would want to keep – it had hardly been used – so if I set the BIOS to read the DVD drive will it automatically load, or are these “pre-installation tools” – whatever they might be - needed? There was also a drivers disc for the motherboard so that will also help!
I’ve never been quite sure how OEM licences work. Given that both the outer and inner packaging were open when they came to me, can I be sure that the licence is not already in use? Presumably if it is, MS will deny me access and I will need to buy a new OS?

From the info provided in your later posts, and i admit i have NOT heard of the LCP before,
i would try the other licence key you have
Control panel >> system >> change product key

The local no for MS activation is 0800 0188354,
I do not believe the first person you speak to will know about LCP versions, so ask them directly if they do, they should then pass you up the line to a more experienced person, you might get lucky thou and give you a new key

Hi Roy,

Thanks for returning to my problem.

My Googling would suggest that LCP merely refers to the packaging (Low cost packaging - i.e. card, not DVD case etc.!).

Given that I know nothing of the history of the disc with the different key and that it was opened when it came to me (though as I said it does still have the COA label), at this point in time I am basically only concerned that if I change the licence key or reinstall windows with the "new" licence key I will disturb whatever tampering has taken place and as a consequence might end up (if the new disc is also "dodgy") with an unusable or un-updateable machine. If that is the case I think I would prefer for the time being to let sleeping dogs lie - at the moment, I have not got the spare funds to purchase Windows 10.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,
sorry for delay Mondays pub night+games.

Any non standard installation
ie oem System Builder/Retail will only ever give you 1 code.
The off the shelf comps, give you a generic code in built in the system, which most people dont know,
which is the one being reported in your Mgadiag, for an Asus, and a secondary "back-up", the 1 on the sticker attached to the comp.
You can change it to that, BUT i STRONGLY suspect it will still give you the same problem if you try to upgrade to W10.
note MS Very very rarely block unique codes.
dont rock the boat, but if you speak to MS in regard to an LCP install you could find out more.
