Unfortunately this could be any number of things if no error report is given.

Give the following a try:

  • Check to see if your firewall has blocked/sandboxed the catalyst installer. I personally use Comodo Internet Security and often find new files get sandboxed and can't install/run properly as a result. If this is the case you'll need to add the installer as a trusted file via the control panel of your chosen firewall.
  • Redownload the catalyst installer. There's always the chance that you have a damaged file.
  • Boot up in safe mode and try to install the catalyst installer from there.

catalyst and it's installer both require updated .net framework elements too. I think it needs to be 3.5 or better.
Also what card are you using?

How do I check which card I am using? I recently installed SP1 if that would have any effect on this.

Ya sorry, its a laptop Acer Aspire 7745g. When I run dxdiag my display name say: Standard VGA Graphic Adapter and Manufacturer says: (Standard Display Types). Prior to uninstalling my old driving it was something along the lines of ATI Radeon Mobility 5xxx

Catalyst drivers and Laptops

Being a Laptop..

Is the Driver installer from Acer?

You will not be able to use the Catalyst installer from ATI/AMD.. well you can if you hack the installer (the how to link escapes me at this time).
The reason many of these tools do not tell you what the "Card" is is because many look to the registry - HKLM typically.. and if the drivers have been removed... there is nothing in the registry to feed these programs..

As for no error message? Did you check the event viewer? I know it is a bit of a hunt.. this site has a handy tool (SF-Diagnositc) to help you sort these sort of things out.

yes, I agree - for laptops, it is generally better to go the manufacturer's site
and download their recommended driver..

the AMD has mobility drivers which should work, but often the manufacturer
has a special version, designed to work with their own hardware..

Hey bro... Dont worry... U r a little confused... This problem sometimes arises due to some driver component of system restrict the installation when u install an updated new driver on an old driver, without deleting older one.. Just do one thing.. Go to controll panel and delete ccc & go for a fresh installation.. If it not works, download a software, namely DRIVER FUSION.. It deletes all the components of your display driver and allow you to have a fresh installation of new one..
U will have your problem solved.. Try and give your f/b.

I did uninstall ccc then used driver fusion, but when using driver fusion I only chose the options AMD – Display, Intel – Display, Nvidia – Display. Was I suppose to choose the chipsets as well?

Its not mandatory to select chipset.... But if u want u can have a fresh installation of chipset also... But in my point of view.... no need to select this....

This problem originates from the fact that, as you state in your original Post, you " uninstalled your old Drivers to install new ones". I did that, a long time ago, and hit the same problem you are having.

AMD/ATI Catalyst updates do not work that way. Catalyst updates always look for the previous Drivers, uninstall them if they are older than the Update, and install the new ones, without a hitch. I have a PC with an AMD Radeon 6770 and a laptop with a Radeon 5450 Mobile card. All Catalyst updates have been carried out just as I say, for the last 3 years plus. And I have NEVER used the manufacturer's Drivers - always AMD/ATI Catalyst ones.

I think you need to find and kill all traces of any Graphics drivers. Then power off, wait a while and switch on. Windows will tell you that you need Drivers. It will look for them. If you can get the Windows Drivers, use them. At the next instance of AMD asking if you want a Catalyst Driver, let it go ahead. Do not uninstall the old Drivers - Catalyst will do that.

Think about it - Acer, the manufacturer, has Drivers, but does not manufacture them. AMD/ATI actually does manufacture them. Not only that, it upgrades them regularly. Who is going to have the best & latest drivers for you?
