This probably isn't the first or 500th mention of this topic, but I had mysterious and intermittent BSOD issues, that disappeared for me after I completely uninstalled Avast! free and its remnants from my computer.
I have no idea why Avast! worked 100% great on my computer for more than five years, including updating the software itself when asked, and then this past fall the occasional blue screens started.
http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-hel...ds-last-six-weeks-most-recent-0x00000101.html documents my blue screens, and the discovery of Avast! as the culprit. There's also the link in there to the removal process I used, a three-step process to get everything out.
I'm a pretty smart and safe computing person, so not particularly worried about malware, so I just went with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Just posting this in case someone else with Avast! is having problems, or as a caution to anyone considering the product for their AV needs.
