Freezes when trying to shut down... And so much more

Hi this is my first post so forgive me if I am in the wrong area or do something wrong. This problem started with my second laptop, an Acer 5750z with windows 7 ultimate and pretty much everything else original from when it was manufactured in 2012. I started getting blue screens every once in awhile but I figured the hdd was so old that it was likely the problem and planned on swapping it when I got the chance and felt like it. Plan was I would remove the drive and use my main laptop (HP dv7 win 7 ultimate x64, newer hdd, runs smoothly) to clone the old troublesome drive onto a new drive with easeus todo backup. I've done this before when HPs original hdd was dying and it worked flawlessly so I figured I'd do it again. When I plugged in the would be replacement drive to make sure it was wiped clean before the procedure (I had used this drive as an external for moving a few files before) the wipe process reached 5% and everything froze. I had to shut down the HP by holding the power button, after rebooting I tried again and the same thing happened! So I thought OK maybe it's this drive, well I'll just use a different drive to clone to, I have several brand new 2gb Seagate external drives I can remove from the case and use. So anyway the next time I turned on the Acer to see if it was going to continue giving me blue screens or just to see if it would be useable at all, it seemed OK, but I noticed my Malwarebytes had an alert that all my protections were off and I didn't turn them off, not could I turn them back on! It was like the buttons to turn any of them on were frozen. I tried closing mbam and everything just froze, since then it's been a crazy mess of everything, no programs would open, everything else was fine but I couldn't get anything to open, task manager showed everything I had tried to open was running but I couldn't see it. Every time I tried to restart I would have to do it by holding in the power button because it would not shut down on its own. Sometimes I'd shut down and when I powered back up everything would seem normal and fine but it would not shut down or restart, it would hang on the windows is shutting down screen. I've tried running mbam and no Malware is found, tried scanning with avast, no problem found, I was going to use a restore point and there was only one available from earlier that day, no others could be found. And since then no more have been created for some reason. Every time I get it restarted it has a different random problem arise but the previous problem I had would be gone, the one problem that never goes away is the not shutting down. Eventually I just shut it off and gave up. My HP has been pretty much acting normal, so I've been using it to watch Netflix, try to search for answers to the acers issue and normal stuff. Well last night the HP started acting like the Acer, first when I hovered over the Wi-Fi network symbol on the taskbar to see if I was connected to the right network I got no balloon with the name of the network in it, then I clicked on it and still no response, something the Acer did. Then I tried to restart and wouldn't ya know it, hung up, I had to shut down with the power button again. Both my laptops are connected via my homegroup internet connection so I'm wondering if it is some kind of malware or virus and it's gotten to my HP through that? I don't know but I am hoping to get some kind of idea what to do before my HP gets to the point the Acer is at now. Sorry for the long post

Welcome to the Forum

Fist thing you should do is to remove the HDD from the Acer and with the HP backup your data files. Programs and OS isn't important at this point.
Then run a check disk. Open a CMD window and type chkdsk y: /f (replace y: with the letter you see it on the HP)
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks and / or bad clusters.

That's something I forgot to mention, I ran a check disk on the HP already and everything was good. And another thing I've noticed is that when I start the Acer in safe mode it seems more stable, no freezing or anything, but even in safe mode I would still get a message from mbam "real time protection turned off" and it's impossible to turn any of the features back on. Anyway I just turned on the HP in safe mode with command script or whatever, to try to run another chk dsk, and boom, MBAM pops up with guess what message?! Real time protection turned off! And I cannot turn anything back on. I'll let you know how this chk dsk turns out as soon as its done.

How are you connecting the Acer HDD to the HP?

Using a USB cable and the sata adapter from a disassembled external hard drive case. I ran another disk check, no bad sectors found. When I restarted afterward it went into normal mode (not safe mode) and I noticed MBAM had no problem message so I was gonna run a scan. Soon as I clicked to open the Malwarebytes window everything froze. Had to ctrl alt del to attempt to shut down and it got to the blue windows logging off... Screen and once again hung there. When I first booted up to do the disk checker I booted into safe mode though, and it had no problem restarting from there to run the test.

Malwarebytes is basically a antivirus. The both (free and paid) version are loaded at startup but the free version isn't active (I don't like as it stays resident on memory doing nothing).
Malwarebytes my be conflicting with your antivirus.
Fist thing I would do is to uninstall it. Reboot, then try to download and install a new version.
