I use the CCleaner "Run Cleaner" and Registry tab, followed by the also-state-of-the-art Auslogics Disk and Registry Defraggers, after an install is completed and then about every month.

A good rule of thumb is if you have to wait long for it to complete, then run it more often.

[If it gets bogged down with temp internet files, then check "Empty temporary folder when browser is closed" in Internet Options>Advanced.]

In ten years of installing on hundreds of machines, and knowing dozens of others who have used it regularly, the CCleaner has never presented ANY issues. It simply doesn't seem to make mistakes, probably a tribute to the genius behind it.

The only issue I've run into with CCCleaner is with the registry cleaner. With both Office 2007 and Office 2010, myself and others have had issues where using the registry cleaner causes Office to reconfigure itself each time you open a program.

This shouldn't be a problem as long as you uncheck the Office box when you clean.

Although the registry cleaner of CCleaner seems to be safe, there is really nothing to be gained in Windows7 and Vista. But if you do, a registry backup is useful (as offered by CCleaner) - better be safe than sorry.

Easiest is to uncheck "Unused file extensions" from the list on the left, and then don't worry about them anymore.

My experiences: CCleaner is marvelous. Has never, never, never given me any problems And yes, I'm an avid Office user and am presently using the Office 2010 RTM.

I also use, daily, the registry cleaner portion of CCleaner. This keeps a couple of spying, but othewise legit programs, honest by removing their indicator entries into the registry.. Also removes MS's tell-tale entries.

I have used CCleaner almost since the day it was released. I am a staunch supporter and advocate for CCleaner.

I've used it for a long time now, a few years at least. Never had a single issue with it. Te registry cleaner is pretty safe, it doesn't dig as deep and some other programs, usually only getting rid of the obvious things.

Just make sure that, when you are using the registry cleaner that you create a backup if anything is found.

You say it keeps finding the same things over and over?
You're not continuously hitting the "Scan for Issues" only, are you?
I know this may not come across right, but there is a "Scan" button, and there's a "Fix" button for the reg. cleaner, and an "Analyze" button, and "Run Cleaner" for the file cleaner.

CCleaner is the best known free maintenance program there is. They just released a new version of it a few days ago. And to compliment what some of you have said, CCleaner did cause problems to some users so its technically not fully safe.

I use it with 4 other tweaking programs. For more info please visit:

Microsoft publishes and updates a Windows 7 Application Compatibility List as an Excel spreadsheet.

The included snapshot is of the CCleaner entries in that list. A "logoed" version has been blessed by Microsoft. A "compatible" version without a logo is a statement from the the software company that the product is compatible. When a company submits a version to be "logoed", the the wheels of Microsoft turn slowly which is why the "logo" runs behind the release of a product major-minor version.
