Using CCleaner regularly to clean the Registry I see these file types below listed in great numbers. Is there a specific place to look for a problem? Nothing seems to be wrong.

Thank you.

Most experienced members of this forum would recommend not using a registry cleaner at all. They generally cause more problems than they solve.

Correct. Windows 7 is not XP. It does not need registry cleaning.

Thanks kado897. It is confusing if some say CCleaner is OK and others say 'never with Win7'.

CCleaner is the safest of the registry cleaners and causes few problems, but they can happen. It's best not to use any.

Another tip, if you do use it, use the back up option it gives, just in case.

The problems with using a registry cleaner are inherent with any OS that has a registry, at least with any registry used in Windows. The problem is that it rarely possible for a registry cleaner to determine with 100% accuracy that a registry entry is in error or unused. That being the case it must often guess. Most of the time the guess is correct, but sometimes not.

Microsoft once had a registry cleaner available for download. It was later dropped - because it caused problems with some Microsoft products. It was last updated in 1998, prior to the release of Windows 98. Although no longer available from Microsoft it can be downloaded from other sites. I am sure many people are using it with Windows 7 and even Windows 8 believing it to be safe. It is a problem just waiting to happen.

VERY Interesting. LMiller, can you elaborate with a 'for example', re how cleaners perceived null entries and broken CLSIDs, and how this could be attributed to the state of a library/service/process?

I recently began to appreciate that Tuneup Utilities "clean" everything maybe isn't the best approach - rather, better to see why something is broken (instead of just deleting the broken reference), but it seems there's more to this...

what's wpcmig.dll? And does anyone have any theories on why this reportedly broken CLSID keeps persisting?

thanks
