If you follow Rich 100% you'll have lots of trouble free time with your new computer. Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials will keep you covered and you can get rid of everything else. Lot less to worry about that way.

And, how do you know what you're getting for Christmas before Christmas? That's completely unfair. :D

By the way, what is the difference between system restore (which I know how to do) and a system image?

I will tell you, but everything like that is in the tutorials that I gave you.

System Image is an image of your entire hard drive. As soon as you get your computer, install your programs etc and make a system image and put it on an external hard drive and forget about it
Once a month on another drive make a system image and update it once a month
If you ever have a serious problem you can restore your hard drive with the current image
If its a very serious problem, you can restore it with the one that you put away. A very serious problem is something like a virus thats on the current system image, too.

This is what I have
No registry
and I have the cookies that I want in the saved column, right.

After all the bloatware, do a defrag and chkdsk.

For vista and Seven. No reg cleaners, mechanic tune up etc.
Just do this
http://www.sevenforums.com/performa...uggestions-proper-maintenance.html#post764471

Use Microsoft Security Essentials for all windows
Download and use Malwarebytes weekly. These are all free
Use the Windows Firewall.

System Temorary files affects cookies, make sure that you have cookies in the right column if you want them saved

Cookies remembers passwords etc.

Hmm, I added my Temp Folder for CCleaner to clean. Should I not have

I hate to disagree with my friend Rich on Christmas Eve but I've put CCleaner on hundreds of installs representing thousands of uses and never had an issue with either its Disk or Registry cleaner.

It is unfair to lump it in with most Registry cleaner sales scams, as the CCleaner is a genius app which is possibly the most highly regarded utility in the tech world for a dozen years.

Here are some tips for cleaning up a bloatware install based on hundreds of them done here: http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...p-all-four-primary-partitions.html#post952573

The few problems that I know of using CCleaners registry cleaner have been it will strip desktop icons of certain programs, in my case Garmin Mapsource and it messed with Sharks codecs setting application toolbox. After reinstalling both of those programs (easier said than done) I put them on the exclude list under options.

It may, or may not have, also messed up Adobe 8 Pro printer in which case I could no longer save to print or make Word docs etc into PDF's. Regardless, once fixed I also put Adobe on exclude along with any other sensitive, expensive, or PITA program.

I tend to be someone that installs and uninstalls lots of programs when I need them for a special occasion so I tend to use the registry cleaner more than I should. Like a kid in a candy store, I almost wish it wasn't there.

+1 ...i for one never have any problem with using ccleaner for Regs/cleaning ..for almost 5 years now ....
I guess ...every pc is different ...the way we set it and using it .If it does not work for you ..does not mean it won't work for others ..make sense ...?;)
But to be fair ...all of my friends are happy with it ...
It's The most wonderful piece of free cleaning tool out there .

Sometimes a registry tool is necessary. I have had installs fail with the "previous version detected please uninstall and begin again" type message. Of course I had uninstalled the previous version but it left tracks through out the registry. So you hope something like CCleaner will do the clean up or you fire up regedit and let the fun begin.

Regarding "real time" protection.

You can also pay about $20 and get a lifetime license for the "real time" version of the highly respected Malware Bytes program. It auto-updates 3 or 4 times a day, with no interaction required.

It runs alongside Microsoft Security Essentials without any conflict.
