Hi

I am trying to install Windows 7 onto my laptop as I want to do a clean install to wipe off everything and have windows freshly put on.

My cd/dvd drive cannot read the disc. You can here the drive attempting to load up the disc but to know success.
I have tried Microsoft Fix, does not work (however, it has in the past as well as booting from disc at startup-that too has worked in the past), I have tried booting from the cd/dvd drive on bootup, I have attempted to go into the registry and delete lowers installers I think its called (I didnt do this on previously installation attempts and I installed fine).

I have all correct drivers according to my laptop, plus Ive gone into the packard bell website to download the correct drivers and I have used windows update too in case im missing anything.

Nothing is working.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks:)

First off, stop messing with everything in the system to try and make the dvd drive work.

Does it read other discs fine ?

Have you used this disc b4 ?

Hi AddRam

The drive reads other discs fine yes. I just tried a dvd for example. Loaded up a bit slow, but it loaded fine and played.

Borrow an external CD/dvd drive and run it from there! Alternatively you could create a bootable USB stick and install it from there (step by step guide available online).. This however does require some thinking and a lot more time than the external DVD drive option.

No, putting the windows installer on a usb drive is childs play, and takes about 30 seconds.

windows installer on usb stick

AddRam

How much space would I require to do this.

I surfed the net, and it says I need around 4gb?

Also, if I put windows installer on the usb drive, im not the most computer literate and what would I need to do?

Can I perform a custom install just like what the windows installation cd/dvd offers so I can cleanly install everything like new?

The Windows disc was bought on Amazon a while ago now and I have since used this disc twice successfully, had a few problems loading it up like now, but never this difficult. It is an authentic copy as I confirmed with Microsoft authenticity.

I know I have to buy a USB 4gb stick if that`s what I want to do, but at the moment, I do not have money, for this reason I do not buy one!

I will ask a friend for an external cd/dvd drive, best I think.

Thanks AddRam for your help up to now.

Always glad to try and help.

Like I said, check the disc on another machine, maybe make a copy of it.

Making copies removes any defects. Scratches etc.

Good Luck ;)

Maybe some files on your disc are corrupted . Download an .ISO file of your edition of win7 and then follow AddRAM's 3rd tut .

Where did you get the Win7 DVD? Did you burn it yourself? Burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Do you get a prompt to "Press any key to boot disk" when you set DVD drive first to boot in BIOS setup?

If not try triggering DVD with the one-time BIOS boot menu key given on first boot screen.

If it doesn't boot then there's something wrong with the DVD, ISO or burn. Is DVD new, clean and unscratched?
