I am having a problem burning CD/DVD's but it has only happened recently as they used to burn easily. Im unsure what the problem is and have tried looking on the internet to find help but so far havent had any luck. When I try to burn a disc my laptop reads the disc fine and acts like its burning until a few minutes later when it comes up with an error message! Does anyone know how i can fix this? I have an Acer Aspire 5536 laptop and Windows 7. Thanks

Welcome to SevenForums!

Have you checked to see if your firmware is up to date? What computer do you have and under Device Manager, what is the name and model of your drive? Can you also right-click the drive and see what driver you have for us?

How do i check to see if my firmware is up to date? I do actually get an error message sometimes which says my firmware may not be up-to-dat but i couldnt find out how to do this anywhere. Im not sure if this is the driver model but when i go on device manager i found this - "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20N ATA Device".

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
It could be that the actual DVD's are a bit dodgy and that is why you can't burn.

I got a batch of DVD's and when I tried to burn them my PC just froze.

The error message i get when i try to burn using the default windows burning program is - "The disc wasn't burned successfully. Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your CD or DVD burner installed, and then try again"

I did wonder if it was the DVD's as i was using Asda's own brand but then I also tried Phillips and they also didnt work.

You should go into device manager and see if you can update the drivers.

How long ago do you last remember it working, why don'tyou go and restore your PC to the last time you remember it working, that may help.

If it is saying that it is a firmware issue then find out who manufactures you drive then go to their website and see if you can download the firmware for the drive.

This will tell you exactly the drive you have:

Speccy - Download

If you type the name of your optical drive into a google providing you have the google toolbar it will automatically come up the the name of your drive and add firmware at the end as well beforeyou have finished typing.

If you dont have the toolbar then just add firmware at the end, and it should take you to straight to your optical drive, and there should be an option for firmware.

Typed it into google and got loads of results but most of them related to slightly different drivers. I've tried the Acer website but couldn't find any firmware updates. I think the problem actually started quite soon after I updated from windows vista to windows 7 so im not sure if thats got anything to do with it :S

You aren't looking for a driver you are looking for the firmware which may be different. If you type the full name of the device the firmware it should take you to the drives manufacturer.

But if it only happened since you upgraded your OS then it may be that the driver wont support windows 7.

type the name of the optical drive that is displayed in speccy and I will see if I canfind it
