CD/DVD no longer detected

The OS came with the computer and I don't have a clean install. I have a repair disk that I created.

I'm back with the same problem. Explorer does not recognize the DVD drive even though the device manager says it is working properly. I thought I had cured it when I used my system repair disk that I made when I first got the computer. Prior to using it, I made a disk image using Windows backup app. What I didn't know was that it doesn't make a complete image of the C: drive but only of the operating system. Consequently, after using the system repair disk, I had to reinstall all my apps. Fortunately, I had backed up my user folders. I've tried using Windows troubleshooter and it didn't fix it. After using the system repair disk, it worked OK for a few days and then gradually got worse because initially, I could reboot and cure the problem, now I can't. Any suggestions?

This is due to some application you have installed, or the drive is just bad.

Showing in Device Manager is not an indication that the drive is working properly.

I'm not sure if I'm on the right track, but if the drives are present in the Device Manager, but not present in the explorer, then it could be that the drive letters need to be added.

I don't think this is a case of missing/wrong drive letter.

I tried changing the drive letter but it wouldn't accept the change. However, the DVD drive appears in Explorer. I still have my fingers crossed to see if it remains.
