Perhaps it is a drive issue as I've just found that I can play and rip it on my old XP system although it might be a copy protection problem too. I haven't really followed all the DRM issues much over the years and thought that it had all been abandoned by now - I know, I'm just too, too honest - sign of my age. Perhaps it is just older CDs like this one although I think it is a new remaster. Anyway problem solved - so a big thanks to all who contributed.
