changing the native resolution on my graphics card

I just bought a new hd tv to use my as monitor. its a 1080p which I assume meant the resolution is 1920 x 1080. my laptop correctly identifies my t.v but makes the native resolution 1366 x 768. this is HUGE. Am i doomed to have this resolution where i change how big my icons are or is there a way to make my graphics card show up in 1920 x 1080. It does it just fine on my laptop screen which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

8 gb ram

the t.v is a vizio

Are you mirroring the main desktop on the TV monitor? Or, are you using it as a second desktop? Not sure if it matters, but the only stupid questions are the unasked....
Also, HDMI? Just assuming...

If you are using a Nvidia Mobile gpu then you need to use the GPU to fix resolution and scaling

that is why you have Nvidia control panel you have to tell it what you want it will not do it on it's own
