When I try to do a back up, I can't and the error message says to run check disk. So I am trying to do just that. I have tried twice from the C: and once from the tools section of the properties menu. Each time it stops at the same file and will not continue. What can I do? Thanks.

What backup program are you using and what part of chkdsk is it stopping in?

A valid question.

Once when I tried to backup a new Windows 7 install on a new HDD, Paragon backup refused and advised that I check and repair the disk with manufacturer's diagnostic/repair utility. Yes, the advise was very specific.

When I tried another backup program ShadowProtect Desktop it said that the disk has some non-fatal errors but finished the backup all the same.

I then ran SeaTools for DOS and it did find errors and a lot of the same error and fixed it. - at this point I don't remember what exactly was the error.

Once the errors were fixed, Paragon was able to backup successfully.

Based on this experience, I would advise the OP to run the disk manufacturer's utility and fix any errors. My presumption is that some disk errors may be beyond chkdsk's domain.

How much (free) disk space do you have? Check disk and defrag need a little elbow room to work properly.

Take a look in the Events log for Chkdsk entries (application or system logs).

Try running chkdsk with no boxes ticked (read only mode)
Try running chkdsk at boot or when booted from another media

Thank you all for the replies. I do want to apologize for my lateness in getting back to this forum but that darn work gig that I have to do to pay the bills kept getting in my way.

I did download the system tools that are specific for my external hard drive and was able to run the check disk from that. Now I am going to attempt the backup again and I feel hopeful.

Great suggestions!!

I presume that you downloaded and ran the disk manufacturer's diagnostic/repair utility. Can you please be more specific on what utility you used?

Apart from the above information, keep us posted how the backup went on.
