Hi GerryWolfe, welcome to the forums!

0x80073712 is a very nasty error and I'm not very hopeful this is fixable, but let's have a look.

If you navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config, you will see most of your registry hives. There will, or at least should, be a file in there called components, how big is it?

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.

Have you got any System Restore points from before this problem started? A components hive should be in the region of 40-60MB, depending on the number of updates installed. I've seen quite a lot of these problems recently, where the hive is completely destroyed beyond repair. Unless you have a restore point (or a full disk backup etc.), the only way you can recover from this is to cut your losses and do a repair install:

He does :) The second line of the CBS log shows the path of the servicing stack that's currently loaded on the computer:

Code:
2013-07-29 08:41:50, Info CBS Loaded Servicing Stack v6.1.7601.17592 with Core: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17592_none_672ce6c3de2cb17f\cbscore.dll

Note the version number; 6.1.7601 is Windows 7 SP1, 6.1.7600 is Windows 7 RTM :)

But he won't be able to install an update ever again until the components hive is fixed.

Tried to do the SP1 install, failed, no error codes given.
So... how does one fix the components hive???

Thanks to all who are responding... hope to get to the stage where I can be a "giver" on this site instead of a "taker"!

You will never be able to install an update again until you have a functional components hive, so save yourself the time and don't bother trying :) It's impossible.

I already told you how to fix this:

Have you got any System Restore points from before this problem started? A components hive should be in the region of 40-60MB, depending on the number of updates installed. I don't have any restore points prior to the issue.
Ran the repair from DVD, it said it made some fixes, reran the repair and it found no probs. It created a "restored" version on another partition. I booted from this, it said there were a few updates available and I succesfully installed them.
Went back to do a check for updates, it failed again with the same error code.

All of a sudden Ubuntu is looking good...

Are you sure you followed every step of the tutorial? The steps you describe don't sound like the repair install procedure, and I know a repair install fixes this so the error shouldn't be there any more.

Don't have a Win7 SP1 DVD, don't have Win7 install DVD. Gateway DX4830 had a restore partition on the orignal HDD. I created a repair DVD from it. Used XXClone for image copies weekly, on a second HDD..
Orignal HDD failed, I got Win7 back from the second HDD.
Win7 is currently on SSD.
Can I fix from the repair DVD I created from the original Win7? I created this the first day after I bought the DX4830. This is the repair DVD I referrred to previously.

Thanks again for the help!!!

As far as I know, you can't perform a repair install with recovery media I'm afraid. You can download a Windows 7 ISO from here, then burn it to a disc and use that instead though:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Alternatively, you could do a clean install with the discs you currently have and start from scratch. You'll be problem free, but it's more hassle. Your choice :)

Re-read the instructions... see that I need to use the install disk, not the repair disk.
Am downloading and will retry.

So, did the download of Win7 Home Premium with SP1 and burned it to a DVD.
Tried to do the install, it failed -- said I need to install SP1 via "check for updates".
I will download the Win7 Home Premium install w/o SP1, burn it to a DVD and try again.

GerryWolfe, one thing to remember when doing an install. Wipe the existing partitions with the install disk and of course you have copied all your important files to an external device, right?

Also you evidently are trying to upgrade you existing windows. Upgrades will normally fail if sp1 is not installed.

Like I said. Wipe the disk with the option in the install. Don't do an upgrade, delete the existing partion and then it should work.

Uh, no...
It will take me days to reinstall all my programs. Wiping the partition and re-installing is last-ditch effort, I could have done this a week ago.
I'm looking for a repair, not a reload.

Will keep all posted.
