I am 230 road miles from Anchorage Alaska, Homer just waking up 8 am. it is 39 degrees out snow is melting I can hear it dripping from roof. It is still dark for 2 hours but gaining about minute half per day of daylight. If I could see anything out side I would be looking across Kachemak Bay at 5 glaciers but it is still very dark

I lived on a military base near Big Delta for three years (as a child). Know exactly what you are talking about.

One winter, the ACTUAL temperature fell off the scale which could only measure to -70 F. Every residence had an electric outlet on a pole in their parking space to keep the car from freezing. We kids were bussed (trucked - duce and a half) one block to school.

If you need something to do, come to the Pacific Northwest and mildew. It's 53 degrees and raining (as usual) here.

I would like that ... but afraid I would freeze before I (we, must include better half) got there! I could wear shorts and sandals in a balmy 53! (compared to -3)

So freezing to death in 5 minutes is worse than freezing to death in 6?

I was stationed at Eielson AFB just south of Fairbanks for 4 years. Coldest I saw was -58. Was a beautiful drive back to NJ when I left. Made it in 4.5 days solo.

Unfortunately, that below zero air is supposed to arrive here Sat. At least we have some snow on the ground to help insulate things.

Except the snow insulates the ground keeping the heat below ground so the air is even colder!!

Don't care about outside, I bank the snow up around the foundation and with some on the roof does wonders to keep the heat in the house. Just where I want it.

It could be that cold but today was 40 degrees above with melting snow and rain. The bay tends to moderate the temp. when it is cold it is very cold but the past 2 weeks have been just at freezing. Jut strange how the temperature is warmer here in Alaska than it is in the continental United states. I know I am enjoying the warmth
