I have been reading the many posts on Chkdsk not working, because it does not work for me and I hoped to see a solution.
None yet - is it really effective in windows 7 there seems to be no in depth knowledge of how it works in windows 7?
In my case, if I run "fsutil dirty query" from the command prompt as an administrator I get a NOT dirty reply. If I run Chkdsk on any of my inside SATA drives I get the same error (report attached) referring to missing Chkdsk logs. After the reboot boot has finished I cannot find restored files or the Chkdsk log.

Probably I should just stop bothering because the system is working without problems: but I hate to leave a reported error unexplained. Moreover I do not know of any tool which even at a price which will check the NTFS system like Chkdsk:sarc:
I would be so glad to receive suggestions!
Regards
Onclejean

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,

In layman's terms, the orphaned files that CHKDSK is finding are "fragments" or segments of files that Windows cannot associate with the directory structure on your PC. If I recall correctly, if you browse to the root of your C:, you will find a direrectory/folder containing these fragements.

Lets try a few things to find out what is going on:

1. Firstly, BACKUP any critical data on your system.

2. Can you check to see whether your hard disk is fragmented? If so, can you defragment it.

3. Do you know what make of hard disk you have? If so, then download the manufacturers diagnostic checking tool from this site, and run a test and report back the results:

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

4. Have you tried to run a CHKDSK from a command line with any parameters for recovering bad sectors? If not, please follow these steps to do so:

a. Click Start Orb, and in the search box, type cmd
b. Right-click on cmd that appears in the list, and choose run as administrator
c. In the cmd window, type chkdsk /R
d. Hit enter

You will be prompted if you wish to schedule a CHKDSK at next reboot. Choose Yes.

When you reboot, prior to loading Windows, chkdsk will run - this can take some time. DO NOT interrupt the process, let it finish completely.

Post back here if you need more help.

Regards,
Golden

ChkDsk does not work + Win 7 Ult

Hi Golden
Thanks for your help. I have done all those things, alas, with out success.
I have newish two Western Digital very hi-speed disks
Drive #1& 2 - WDC WD6000HLHX-01JJPV0 (558 GB)
These are system and backup system and I have a 2 TB WD hi speed Sata for rescue, installers, picture library etc
and an external WD passport USB 3 drive for secure backup
I have used the WD diagnostic tool on all the internal drives which reports all OK.
i can never find the recovered files but each time I run ChkDsk I get exactly the same report.
