chkdsk errors

Hello,

This is my first here in this forum. Please excuse and let me know if this not the correct forum to post.

When I run the chkdsk, I am getting the following error:

After it encounters that message, chkdsk stops. I am guessing the HD got corrupted?? What can I do to fix this issue?

Run CHKDSK /F and it will fix any errors it finds. You are running Chkdsk in read mode only. It cannot fix anything unless you tell it to with the /F parameter.

Type cmd in search

Right click on cmd (do not hit enter)

In cmd type sfc /scannow. This is the method usually used to fix corrupt files. If that does not work you can use a repair install.

thanks to all for responding. I ran the sfc /scannow per rich's suggestion. It came back saying that windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations. What does that mean?

Also earlier, I had run the chkdsk /F, but it says that the vol. is in use by another user. Do I need to restart to kick this off?

Really does the index error that I am getting mean that the HD could be corrupt or is it something to do with IE??

You should turn off and boot your computer at least once a week. The boot process fixes minor problmes which may have ocurred during your session.

You should, also, visit the website of your HD mfg. A test should be provided to test your HD.

Thank you for the response. This issue is with my personal laptop. I turn it off everyday and reboot it. Other than the mfg, is there any other 3rd party free s/w with which I can test the HD?? On a side note, do you know how I can uninstall IE8?

You cannot uninstal IE8 but you can disable it. Type, turn windows features on or off, in search. Then just uncheck IE. You must have another browser or you cannot get online.

CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

If you repeatedly get errors in CHKDSK /F /R - then you'll have to start suspecting a problem with your hard drive. Post back if that is the case.

Thank you for the response. Based on the messages, it looks as if the chkdsk /F /R did fix something... But then again my mcafee is showing the same problem that it was showing earlier.

If you continue to get chkdsk errors, then it's likely that there's a problem with your hard drive (there are other possibilities, but that is the most likely).
