Solved Chkdsk question

[PSCO2007]

I got a pop-up on screen yesterday that said the drive had been disconnected.

I re-booted and the drive was there and operating normally.

I ran a Chkdsk over-night and it said "No problems".

I ran a Seagate Tools(Long Generic test) and it said failed.

I opened Acronis Drive Monitor and it said it was at 62 percent - reallocated sectors at 36/100.

This is a backup hdd and I also have info(my dvds) on a 3rd drive, so I'm not concerned, just curious about different results.

I just called Seagate to see if it was still under warranty - expired.

Get your data off, chuck it in the trash.

The purpose of Seatools is to determine if the drive is healthy or not. It told you it failed the test, meaning the drive is dying. Back up your data now and replace the drive.

As i ready said, this drive is already backed up on two other drives.

My question was why chkdsk would run for five hours and tell me everything is perfect, as does Speccy as well as showing healthy in discmgmt.

I've Run Seatools in the past and gotten PASS ,only to have the drive fail the next day.

It seems that there is no definitive test and you're really in the dark with regard to reliability of any hdd

That's pretty much tru of any test. There is no hardware test that is 100% accurate every time. But we recommend the best tests with the best accuracy that we are aware of. We just have to trust the tests and we will be correct, most of the time. That's the best we have.
