Solved CHKDSK running regularly now I have an SSD

Guys, since my recent upgrade to an OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB (oczssd2-1vtxpl120g) SSD, chkdsk is running every other time I boot up.

There seem to be regular file issues too, I've lost key dlls from Avast and had to reinstall it and similar on itunes.

Today, again, the machine is without a working Avast install after the loss of some dlls and I'm worried that the drive is likely faulty.

Can someone recommend the best way of concluding whether there is a hardware fault or not, and if as I expect it is, the easiest way to transfer my relatively new and clean Win 7 OS to another SSD which I'll purchase. I notice there's a firmware upgrade for the drive and I'm tempted to try that, but I'm worried about cock ups basically! I have also wondered if there were issues with my motherboard and it's AHCI abilities, but looking around online there doesn't appear to be much in the way of reported issues with the Asus P5QL mobos.

As part of the SSD transfer I purchased and used Paragon Migrate, which managed to corrupt the install and I had to start again from scratch. A hardware fault might explain that, so I'm interested to see if I can use that same program to transfer to another SSD.

As always, thank you all for your help, this is one of the best technical resources online I've used. :D

Definitely try the firmware upgrade.

I just bought the exact same SSD (but in 60GB) and heard many reports about the same problem - but everyone says that the latest firmware completely fixes them. I plan to check the firmware on my SSD as soon as it arrives.

Well firmware updated yesterday and despite a massive chkdsk run straight away after the update, no chkdsk run today. *fingers crossed*

That's a good sign. :) Hope it was the solution - my SSD arrived in the meantime and the very first thing I did was update the firmware (which already was at 3.50) to 3.55. Now only time will tell. :)

Swear it's slower though. It used to boot up before the windows swirl finished, now it doesn't! :(

That I've never seen, ever. I don't even like the swirl animation but whenever I do see it (usually with various WinPE environments) it always takes its sweet time to play all the way before HD access even continues.

On my own system I have the Vista-style loading bar which is much faster.

It's funny you ask, since people will usually cry "HELP, the pretty boot logo is gone and all I get now is the Vista loading bar". :)

Actually, it seems to go away if you delete everything within C:\Boot except for BCD and BCD.LOG. The system will still be perfectly bootable, although the memtest option in the boot menu won't work anymore.

Disclaimer: this is just what I did with my own setup, it's not official advice and if you fail to back up your system before trying this and end up crashing and burning, it's not my fault. ;)
