When I visit the website Songbird - Welcome The menu looks really weird
This isn't a text rendering thing because the menu text is made of images..

This is how it looks to me:

Looks fine in firefox:

running chrome 10.0.648.204

I've seen this on other sites, don't remember exactly which.
Please help!

Iron 10 and Firefox are identical for me(both look like your firefox image).
(Iron is open source Chrome, that doesn't talk to Google).

Are you running a bleeding edge beta version of Chrome?

It was just an easy way to have a clean version that won't interfere. I have a experience with it, and know it works.
But you could try Chrome Portable instead:

Google Chrome Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

or you could try hacking a clean Chrome profile for testing, but I don't know how to do that with Chrome.

Barring any of that. Try disabling every single add-on and extension and visit that page again.

Make sure you didn't mess with fonts under options...

I tried using incognito which supposedly disables all extensions and it still came out weird.

It seems like it may just be Chrome screwing up the rendering of certain PNG file types.

Looking at the images closely, the chrome one has basically removed all the anti-aliasing from the text. So like for some reason when rendering the image, it won't render any of the "shades of grey" in the image, only the solid colors.

My guess is that the PNG format used is one that is not encountered too often (Palletized mode maybe?) and the Chrome PNG renderer is choking on it. It may think it's a 16 color image when it's really 256 color pallette mode for example.

File a bug report with chrome devs? IF it's a problem with the chrome png renederer then there is nothing you can do other than file a bug report and wait till they fix it. Or switch to FF/IE, or put up with it.

Or try that Iron version, maybe something fixed there. If Iron doesn't work for you but did for other people then there is something else going on still. Like video driver issues?

I think it is premature to file a bug report without confirmation from at least one other Chrome user. It is unlikely Iron fixed anything, it is almost the same version and they don't mess with fonts, they are mainly concerned with making a more private/less traceable Chrome.

It is likely something in the users setup. Who knows what. I have a very strange issue with firefox right now that no one else seems to have and I get it even with a new profile...
