My current OS is W7 Pro, which was upgraded from Home Premium using the Anytime Upgrade key. If I want to do a clean reinstall of the OS I understand I need to reinstall Home Premium first, then do the Pro upgrade. The last time I did a clean install of Home Premium, there was a slew of updates that needed to be installed. Do I need to those updates before doing the Pro upgrade this time?

I would do the updates after you upgrade.

Technically you can pick and choose what updates you want. After I install Word, Access, Excel, Publisher. You get updates for outlook, powerpoint etc. I don`ti nstall those or any of the helps. I don`t need em.

Re "latest official installer with SP1" - I install Home Premium from a CD (Full version, not an upgrade). Does this apply to me? Also when I did the AWU Pro the last time, I had to uninstall SP1 to get around an "upgrade failed" error.

Yes, I wouldn't have suggested it if it didn't apply to you.

Use the latest official installer with SP1 for your licensed version. It is the Product Key that determines which will activate, all installers are the same.

Ya, if your disc isn`t service pack 1, use what Greg has suggested. ;)

I'm sorry - should have explained. What led me to the question about applying to me is "Factory OEM". My computer is a homebuilt - thus the current OS was installed from scratch using a CD.

The only difference is you won't be using the COA sticker key but the Home Premium and then Pro keys.

The rest of the steps will assure you get a perfect reinstall, providing the latest installer to use and tips based on countless installs we've helped with here.
