Cloned SSD not Booting in New PC with USB 3.0 Ports

Hello,

I've been trying to find an answer to my particular issue, but only seem to find postings about new Windows 7 installs. I've recently built a new PC with an Asus B550-F motherboard. My original Windows 7 PC didn't have USB 3.0 ports on it. I've cloned my old HDD to a new SSD for this new PC. I tried the new drive on the old PC and it works perfectly. Very fast now, actually. But for the new PC I know I need USB 3 drivers installed on it to boot. I know already that I can run Windows 7 on it because I did a clean install with another HDD with a modified install DVD with USB 3 drivers on it. Even though I got the clean install to work, I want the cloned SSD running on the new system. I know it is a problem related to the USB 3 drivers because the new SSD is acting the same way as my old Win 7 Enterprise DVD was acting. The Win 7 splash screen would come up, hang up, and then reboot. Once it modified the install disc with USB 3 drivers it worked like a charm.

Any assistance with how to get the drivers working with the cloned SSD is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lack of usb3 drivers will not prevent the os from booting. It would prevent you from using usb connected devices, e.g. mouse and keyboard.

I did a clean install with another HDD with a modified install DVD with USB 3 drivers on it.

The modified media includes other drivers, one assumes.

Therefore, mount the image of the install.wim file of the modified media and export the 3rd party drivers.

Then integrate those drivers into your cloned windows. If those exported drivers include usbxhci.sys, you also need to integrate kb2864202.

That can be done with dism++ in my sig at the bottom of this post.

In addition, if you have moved win7 to a much more recent mobo, you might need to use an "adjust to new hardware" module.

They are available in several disk imaging programs. The usual way is to install the program on a different machine, then let the program create boot media. Then Boot that on the new machine and point the adjust module at your windows directory.

There is a give away of O&O diskimage pro v14 which has it.

OR you could use the older paragon 2010 - but you need to use that with your disk attached to the old machine. Boot paragon 2010 iso, do the adjust. Do not try and boot into the cloned disk on the old machine. Put the cloned disk back in the new machine.
Make Windows 7 bootable after motherboard swap

OR put the clone in the old machine and use sysprep.

Hi SIW2,

Thanks for the response to my problem.

I went ahead and switched motherboards to a Gigabyte B450 Pro WiFi. Hasn't really made anything easier at this point, but has Win 7 driver support.

Then integrate those drivers into your cloned windows.

I went ahead and copied the drivers from the install.wim to the System32/drivers folder on the SSD drive for the new PC.

If those exported drivers include usbxhci.sys, you also need to integrate kb2864202.

That can be done with dism++ in my sig at the bottom of this post.

Here I must admit I am unclear on this. Could you please give me some guidance on what I need to do with these? Dism++ and much of this is new territory for me.

Thanks again for your assistance!

The driverframework update windows6.1-kb2864202-x64.msu needs to be installed ( not copied)

Then the usb3 drivers need to be installed ( not copied)

Simple way to do the above is with dism++.

1. start dism++

2. click the target os in the top pane to highlight it in blue.

3. click "open session"

4. click "Updates" in the left pane

5. click "ADD"

6. browse to the .msu FILE and it will be installed.

7. click "Drivers" in the left pane

8. click "ADD"

9. browse to the FOLDER containing the drivers and they will be installed.

That's all folks.
