Cloning will not start

I am in strife again I went to clone my 120GB SSD to a 256GB SSD this afternoon and the Macrium will not start because it tells me the disk is full does not have enough space. I have uninstalled a lot of stuff that I thought would free up the disk but it is still showing a completely full disk in Properties.

Can anyone tell me how to get out of this? as nothing I try seems to have any effect on the capacity of the drive

If the 256 GB drive is the target, why not just format it or delete all partitions?

You can't even start Macrium on the 120 GB drive, where it is installed?

Are you trying to clone ALL partitions on the 120 to the 256? Or just some of them?

Its installed on the 120GB and it is full and after trying to remove most of the programs, music library etc it was still full and not letting me even uninstall some stuff because there wasn't enough space on the disk to do that and it isn't starting at all now.

Never mind it was an upgrade to 8.1 and I really didn't like it that much. I have an image/s of the rotten thing anyway if I want to play around with it but being on this 7 forum most of the time it was a bit awkward to use because of showing pics of settings etc.

I shall just have to reinstall the original 7 on the 256GB drive and reinstall my pics and music etc. It is my secondary machine now (laptop) it is just the thought of a reinstall

Try to unclog your 120 GB drive.

Click on Start. In the search field type %temp% and open the temp folder shown. Select all and do a Shift+Del. Except for a few folders and files that are current ( leave those alone), you should be able to delete most left-overs.. Check how much space is released. Sometimes it may surprise you, especially if you had been using the photo, audio, video processing. They create many GBs of temp folders/files.

Ok Jumanji I will try that tomorrow as I cannot get past the machine trying to repair itself and if I can get back to the desktop. But I am not holding my breath because it will not even start in safe mode now.

The drive has been telling me for a while it is nearly full but stupidly I took not much notice. If I want to get it back I have to reinstall 7 then use the 8 upgrade disk and then see if it will upgrade to 8.1 - which was free at the time - plus I have the image. But that seems to be a lengthy task and I am in no hurry. My problem is I do things too quickly and well end up in the deep end of the pool

You could also try booting from a Linux CD and see if you can delete temp files on the Windows drive from Linux.
If you do manage to delete enough to get Windows to boot, try TFC Temp File Cleaner.

In some cases I've found a lot of temp files with this tool that can be deleted.
If you can boot Windows you could also turn off Hibernate (if it's enabled), and reduce the pagefile size on the Windows partition.

Ok David I can try that too I use Ubuntu normally but I do have the Linux Mint MATE bootable drive.
I deleted some reg files for some of the software I took off and perhaps I messed it up like that too, but I would have thought it would have safe mode booted all the same.

Not taking a trick these last couple of months my run of bad luck must end soon:huh:

Maybe too many restore points. My system constantly resets the amount of drive space to use at 50%. I don't need 228 GBs of restore points.

Avast is known to cause problems for some, setting the drive space to 50% for restore points.
I think Avast NG is the culprit, if you have that option installed ...

Delete everything from the target SSD - you need all unallocated space there. As long as there is a partition, even an empty one, it is considered full.

Yes well it is probably down to restore points but the problem is getting the machine to boot now I think I have bricked the boot side of things really.

Am not overly concerned it is just that if I were to try and reinstall it I would only get a straight 8 if I want it the 8.1 was free at the time. My docs and photos are on other machines to a larger extent I can email them to myself - it is just the reinstall that is a pain - well the updates anyway.

I suppose it is a fresh start and the thing will not be so cluttered with favourites etc

Well Wolfgang I would love to clone it but it will not boot in the machine the only way I think I can do it is use another machine and hook both drives up with USB / SATA adaptors open Macrium in the work machine and clone the original drive to the new SSD but even so if the original is not going to let me boot then the new drive will not boot??.

The target SSD is clean so it is no problem

Something is wrong here. Cloning from a 120GB SSD to a 240GB SSD should be no problem at all. Are you sure that 240GB SSD is all unallocated space - check in Disk Management. Lack of unallocated space is the only way I can explain the 'no space available' message that you are getting.

No Wolfgang the problem is the 120GB will not boot into the OS that is on it (8.1) so that I can pull up Macrium and do the clone. I tried it when it said my disk was almost full and then the machine proceeded to tell me there was not enough space on the disk to do the cloning.

So I tried getting rid of a few programs only to get the same message doing that - it seems absolutely ridiculous that I should need disk space to uninstall programs. In any case I did try and have now ended up with a drive that will not boot at all not even into safe mode

Did you try booting with a Linux CD to see if you can do any cleanup from there ?

I THINK it's possible to install 8.1 if you have an 8 activation key ...

Hmm, I guess if the 120GB does not boot at all, then you have to fix that first. Did you try a refresh ?
