Hi all.

Brand new install of W7 Ult 64. After installing my vid card driver, MB drivers and LAN driver, I updated using Windows update. Weary of the updates that notify me about and try and get me to purchase W8 and W10, I used the internet (primarily this forum) to find out how NOT install any related KB updates.

I thought I got all of them, but apparently not. When I boot my computer, I have two instances of CompatTelRunner.exe, which apparently, is W10 related. I can not for the life of me figured out how to get rid of this. I had a look here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/380576-compattelrunner-exe.html

- which did not help me. I did some more searching, and I found several updates that are supposedly related - including KB2952664 from the aforementioned thread. However, when I browse to:

Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > View installed updates

KB2952664 is not there. Nor are the other few mentioned elsewhere, which includes KB2977759.

I browsed to the system32 folder where CompatTelRunner.exe is located, thinking that I would rename it to .old, but am unable to. Furthermore, I am unable to change the permissions - whatever I do results in me getting an "access is denied" error.

Was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Thanks in advance.

I got this from majorgeeks. I found it on my system too and got rid of it using this method.

I found it can be deleted, but you have to go into properties, security, advanced permissions, change the owner from trustedinstaller to yourself or admin or Everyone, then you can allow write changes to everyone in the permissions editor, *then* you can delete it, or do what I did which was just rename it
Here's the full post. help!! how to remove or disable CompatTelRunner.exe???

Thanks for that. Pretty cool lil' trick to get to that acct.

Didn't work. Logged in to the admin acct, and no matter what I do, I still get the same error as above.

I have one more thing to try. Hope it works for you.

Thanks for that. Didn't work; apparently, Take Ownership does not appear on certain files, such as .exe files.

Tried taking out the HDD, and putting it in an enclosure. Hooked that up to my other W7 computer; could not delete/change permissions. Hooked that up to my XP computer; could not delete/change permissions. Not even in safe mode. Jeez....

Turns out, that I did in fact have 2977759 installed, as I erroneously mentioned I did not earlier. My search attempt failed, prolly due to me not typing the # correctly <embarrassed>

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977759

Uninstalled that update, and that got rid of the file.

Thanks!

Ownership of Compattelrunner.exe

For anyone who wishes to delete Compattelrunner.exe but not their Windows update, here is the actual process necessary to do so. A straightforward attempt to change permissions will be met with the inability to do so because Compattelrunner.exe is owned by TrustedInstaller, with all others given Read Only permission. SO, let's kill this little butthole:

As an Administrative user, select your START menu.
In SEARCH box type compattelrunner.exe.
Right-click on the file titled compattelrunner and select OPEN FILE LOCATION.
Locate Compattelrunner.exe within the folder. Right-click and select PROPERTIES.
In the PROPERTIES windows, select the SECURITY tab.
Under the SECURITY tab, select the button labelled ADVANCED.
In the ADVANCED window, select the OWNER tab.
Under the OWNER tab, select CHANGE OWNER.
A list will now show of new owners. Select the account you are using and click APPLY.
A prompt will warn you that you must close all PROPERTIES windows to change ownership. Please do so.
Once again, Right-click on Compattelrunner.exe and select PROPERTIES.
Again, select the SECURITY tab.
Click the ADVANCED button.
Select PERMISSIONS.
Select the account you are using from the list.
A new window will appear with permissions options. At the top, select FULL CONTROL under the ALLOW column.
Click APPLY.

You now own Compattelrunner.exe. Trash that piece of garbage and throw your middle fingers in the air to Microsoft and their dirty tactics.

As a side note, you can (and I suggest you DO) use this method for Digitrackrunner.exe as well.

When I have the time to re-screw-up my laptop and remember how I permanently nailed all the GWX components and prevented them from ever re-installing without having to shut off Windows Update, I'll be back to post a How-To. Stay well, and F*** MS.

When I was looking for a solution to this problem i thought, how is this being activated? Well through Windows task scheduler probably. However once looking through the Microsoft task scheduler events there are a lot. I was able to successfully google a solution to where the task was being called. Its being called under Microsoft -> Windows -> Application Experience -> ProgramDataUpdater, just disable this task and it shouldn't run anymore.

If compatel is still running on your comp, you did not stop all the GWX updates.

It was removed by MS in November.

CompatTelRunner is here to stay I'm afraid. That wasn't one of the updates that MS removed when they pushed out the removal of the GWX updates.

KB2952664 and its 8.1 equivalent KB2976978 aren't going anywhere. The 8.1 Update has even been slipstreamed/embedded into the latest 8.1 ISO's available from MS so there is no way it can be removed.
It seems that MS wants these updates on every 7 and 8.1 system. These updates will just keep getting reissued every time a new version is published regardless of whether a user has GWX or not.
Eventually they'll be pushed on to every system that accepts the "rollups", as MS stated it wanted to include all past patches in the cumulative updates.

The only thing you can do (in the case of 8.1) is disable the telemetry from running in Scheduled tasks. I have a list of tasks that can be disabled, but I won't be able to post it until I get home later today.

Also, are you running a pre-SP1 installation of 7? As you shouldn't have KB2977759 installed if you have SP1. That update is for the RTM (PRE-SP1) version of 7.
