Solved Computer battery not being charged

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. Although it's a laptop, I actually use it as if it were a desktop computer and I always run it off the mains rather than via the battery.

Most of the time, it automatically maintains the battery charge at 100% during sessions. However in the past there have been two or three periods where it has allowed the battery charge to reduce to quite a low percentage before charging it back up to 100% again. I assume the power management system does this periodically because it helps to prolong the battery life.

At the moment it is going through one of these periods. However the charge percentage is now right down at 10%, lower than it has ever reached before. I'm beginning to wonder whether the battery is at the end of its life and no longer rechargeable.

As I intend to continue always running off the mains, this is not concerning me unduly. But I'm wondering whether it's advisable to continue using the computer with a completely dead battery (if this eventually happens). Would it be better to remove the battery?

Can you please advise me on this?

I think your battery life has ended. As it can damage the charger or even the internal power supply, I recommend that you remove it from the Laptop and buy a new one or work without it.
On Lithium or NI-ME batteries, the life is related to number of charges (~600).
So, if you power the laptop once a day, even if the battery is charged just a little, it will count as a charge and the battery will die after two years.
A friend has found that if he use his laptop at the office without the battery and attach the battery only when he has no power supply, the battery will last forever.

OK, thanks. That's what I suspected. As I said, I run the computer via the mains anyway, so I'll remove the battery once it gets down to a zero charge.

I have done the same with many Dells and the same happened I have used loads of laptop this way most fail over time

I have tried 100% charge and go battery only then charge and so on, not much improvement

I think the only way is charge the battery fully, remove and work battery free - use battery and then charge and go back to battery only and re charge and remove
