Solved Computer boots up but won't show desktop

Hi!

Recently my friend gave me an old laptop running Windows 7 Starter. It has a BSOD that has been fixed. My problem right now is when I try booting windows (in normal mode) at random times, it doesn't show desktop. The laptop was able to show the log in screen of the users. But when I enter one of the users, it does not show desktop. It just shows a black screen with the mouse pointer (I can move the mouse pointer though). I can still enter the desktop through safe mode.

What should I do? Thanks in advance!

Hello Bryan mate get into safe mode if you can and run these for starters

Yep agree with Thrash Zone and if you want you can also run these even if only to eliminate malware

AdwCleaner Download
delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it or disable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)

Hi! Thanks for your replies. The laptop's keyboard seems to be broken and I really can't run check disk (maybe one of the keys were continuously pressed during startup that's why check disk is always cancelled). I haven't tried running SFC. But I tried running a virus scan using Malwarebytes. It found some threats but it doesn't fix the problem. It seems that nothing was detected.

When I'm in safe mode, I opened msconfig and found a startup entry "Microsoft Windows OS" or something like that. Although it's bit dangerous, I tried disabling it at start up. Then everything went fine. I can now boot normally and I can now see the desktop. I tried uninstalling apps that seems to be bloatware. Then the start up entry magically vanished. Everything's working fine now. Thanks everyone!

PS: Is there any really a start up entry called "Microsoft Windows OS"?

I have never had in msconfig (Startup) "Microsoft Windows OS".

Have you by chance installed Windows 7 again in some fashion?
Possibly a virtual installation or virtual drive.

Yep Bryan glad it is fixed and for what it is worth I have nothing ticked in the start up tab on my machines and I do from time to time go back and check because they can alter sometimes
