Recently installed Win7 and sp1 on new computer. Now I can't get the computer to wakeup after using sleep mode. I have to press the power button on the computer for a few second till it shuts down; then restart. The restart shows windows resume rather than "bad shutdown".

It's hibernating when it shows Resuming Windows.

Try turning off Hibernate in Control Panel>Power Options>Change Plan Settings>Change Advanced Power Options>Sleep settings.

Then set sleep to 1 minute to see if it sleeps correctly. If so, add back Hibernate at 2 minutes to see if it sequences correctly. If so, set these at your preferred timeouts.

If problems persist, check your Performance log to see what is hanging at time of hibernation/sleep: troubleshooting steps

If running through the troubleshooting steps given above don't help, use the tool which the Pro's use to trace sleep/hibernate hangs: Trace Windows 7 boot-shutdown-hibernate-standby-resume issues - MSFN Forums

Thanks Gregrocker. Done! Yes it works fine now. All in the "Change advance power settings".

It would be nice if the worlds problems were so easy to rectify.

Thank you for you time and expertise.:D

Glad it helped.

Hibernate is becoming such a popular default that we need to remind users to periodically restart and shut down windows so Updates cued for either of those functions can install. It also refrreshes the OS.

But it's nice to be able to leave work open on your desktop, then walk away and come back if and whenever you want while using the least possible power needed. And it's faster.
