Hey Guys,

I do some IT stuff for a water company, we replaced their laptops and the main computer. The Main computer we used was a Dell 580, we needed to run a Old program and had to upgrade to professional and install the xp mode to get the old stuff to work.

Now the computer came with 6 gig memory and given time the computer would shut down, I can't find anything in the logs to indicate it shut down, or that anything happened. Checking the memory it's loosing memory each day unit it shuts off.

I had 8 gig of memory and put it in thinking we were having a memory problem. Nothing changes just bought us some time, so I've been logging in regular (logmeinremote) and I have to reboot the computer about every 5 days, by then it's down below 2 gig free and dropping still.

You guys have any suggestions where to look??? Computer runs great, I see a couple errors the only thing I see is that svchost.exe taking more and more memory each day.

Thanks guys for any suggestions.

It's being eaten by a process, this should be easy enough to see in the task manager under the processes tab.
The memory is going somewhere.

Hey Maguscreed,

I'm seeing that svchost.exe as a big mem eater, I've been looking at the task manager and I'll post up a couple
shots later.

Process Explorer

Don't normally recommend this, but since anything can be running inside the service host that application will be able to feed you a little more specific information.

Process explorer needs a good introduction to show how it works and how it can help with poor performance and memory leaks. Who better than Mark Russinovich, the author of the program - links to his excellent video presentations are here:

Thanks fafhrd,

I'm planning some one on one today with this beast and see if I can get a handle on it.

Problem is we are cleaning up some 1903-A3's there for the American Legion and I hope
the temptation to put a bullet in it is not too great:D.

I love your signatures!!!
