Computer crashes when I plug in a USB drive.

No Blue Screen, it seems the computer just dies, goes black, and restarts when I plug in a usb drive. The same behavior happened last night when I unplugged a usb game controller. Very strange. Any thoughts as to why this is happening. The computer boots up fine with the USB drive plugged in, and I can write to the drive, etc.., but when I plug it in, if the computer is up, it immediately crashes..

Can you find anything in the Event Viewer that might help?

Do all USB drives do the same thing, or just 1 specific one?

I have seen this problem with computers using sub standard or old power supplies, how old is your PSU ?

try check your PSU minimum requirements here

The Computer and the power supply are both brand new. The Power supply is 450 watts. This is a computer I built for my Dad who lives 1000 miles away, and I am no longer visiting.. so.. will have to work around his schedule to address the issue. Will try some of these suggestions though, and let you know. Thanks..

well try get the make and model of him, possibly a cheap and cheerful that came with the case ?

If so it's unlikely it's as good as the rated wattage claims and with a graphics card and a few peripherals on a high wattage cpu it's easy to get close to tripping it out ?
