Yeah, this is probably a tale as old as time regarding Windows 7...
And of course this has to start happening when I have to head out on vacation... Tomorrow.

Well, I've been having some problems that started... Actually, it had started doing this before, but yesterday it's been doing this yet again. I was on the computer when the power went out yesterday morning. It seemed to start up fine. But I had to turn it off because I had to go to my grandparents. After I got back, I turned the computer on, and this is when everything starts acting up...

I'll turn the computer on. Welcome screen comes up, followed by the Desktop. However, after a few minutes, things will "Freeze." I can still move the cursor around, but nothing works. Icons. Task manager. Nothing.

I've tried Starting Up in Safe Mode and restarting.
I've tried doing System Restore through Safe Mode.

Now, occasionally this leads to the Windows Welcome Screen, followed by nothing more than a Black Screen.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

EDIT: I've just tried to restart the computer, and now it goes to Black Screen. Cursor is still present.

Pretty much all I could find on this problem (black screen of death):

- Boot with Last Known Good Configuration (F8 menu)
- Restore to a prior date (System Restore) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
- Scan for malware (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free)
- Try a clean startup http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
- Check if explorer.exe is running and start from CTRL+ALT+DEL (task manager - new task)
- Verify in registry: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsot\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon to make sure 'shell = explorer.exe'
- Follow http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
- Check Disk - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
- Try loading defaults in BIOS
- Update all your drivers

I'll try and see what I can do. But The Black Screen isn't the only problem I'm having, as mentioned above...
Whenever I DO manage to get onto the desktop, everything freezes, and all I can do is hold the button down to restart.

Before I attempt a Clean Startup, I ran Malwarebytes. It detected four things, but I forget what they were called... After the scan finished, the computer proceeded to restart. Only to end up with a Black Screen(with cursor(WC)) after Welcome screen.

Black Screen after login screen can sometimes be worked around by uninstalling GPU drivers. But the same drivers can get auto-installed later.

I've tried Booting With Last Known Good Configuration... Even though I don't know what exactly I'm supposed to do on Last Known Good Configuration.
I've tried doing System Restore on Last Know Good Configuration, but for some reason it won't let me do system restore.
I've now tried to do System Restore on Safe Mode/Safe Mode With Networking, and the same error message is coming up :
System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system.
A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application Event log for more information. (0x80042303)

Still haven't tried a clean startup yet.

Last Known Good Configuration - if you could log on without issues that may have been the solution. It simply tries to boot with a backed up registry that was known to boot successfully earlier.

Did you try restarting few times to see if the issue (black screen) is corrected?

Then try clean startup for freezing.

Also - Follow SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I've tried Last Known Good Configuration. While it does bring me onto the desktop, it's on an ordinary Windows Classic theme, and I am unable to access internet. I've tried restarting with Normal Settings, but it only seems to lead me back to how it was when I tried Last Known Good Configuration(which is anything but, not gonna lie).
I can't figure out how to get back to my "normal" configurations.

Maybe we can fix these? Last Known Good Configuration (LKGC) is the real deal, it is not a Safe Mode or anything similar.

Right click desktop - personalize - is an Aero Theme selected? See if you can select an aero theme if not.

Leave internet for after the sfc scan though, as it may require some work.

At worst you can try a Repair Install later if we fail in all our attempts - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Note:
This is the description for LKGC - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html
Starts Windows 7 with the most recent registry and driver configurations that worked successfully. Every time you turn your computer off and Windows 7 shuts down successfully, important system settings are saved in the registry. You can use those settings to start your computer if a problem occurs. For example, if a new driver for your video card is causing problems, or an incorrect registry setting is preventing Windows 7 from starting correctly, you can restart your computer using Last Known Good Configuration.

I am unable to select an Aero theme.
I'm assuming that's what the Themes with the Transparent Taskbars are called?
Apologies for the short response. I am kinda taking baby steps at this point in time.

Well, you could be done with this faster perhaps if you repair install (link in previous post). You will later need to re-install device drivers and Windows Updates.

Go for the sfc scan now, and lets decide after the result. The issues you are having now, may very well be some services not being started or due to corruption. Unnecessary to speculate as of now.

Did you run cmd as admin before trying to scan?

Run Services.msc. Find "Windows Modules Installer" service. Set its Startup type to Manual. Then start it.

Okay, I did that, it's doing that scan... I will update to tell you if anything's different or not.
I'm a bit hesitant in starting the Repair Install method, if it does come to that. While I can follow instructions, I'm not entirely sure I want to tackle it myself...

Alright, also run in that cmd (right after scan finish):
Code:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
and attach the sfcdetails.txt here (it will be on your desktop).

Oooh... Is that something I'm going to have to copy and paste?
I'm on my laptop right now typin' this stuff in while my computer's doin' the do.
I'm not going to be able to do any copy/pasting stuff, because I can't really get onto the Internet with my computer. Even on Safe Mode with Networking.

EDIT: The scan has finished.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them.

Okay, I got it!
LOTS of stuff in the document! But how can I possibly put it here? As I mentioned before, I'm unable to access the internet on my computer, so I can't copy/paste it, nor attach the file here...

It was mentioned that there were a few files that could not be repaired. A few instances of corrupt files being repaired.
Unfortunately, I do not have a USB drive on hand...
It would take me too long to type everything in. And odds are, I would probably end up flubbing up at a certain point if I were to do so.

EDIT: I'm not gonna do anymore work on it... I'll be headin' out tomorrow for the week, so I won't be able to do anything more on the computer.
I will try a little bit more when I get back, but I might have to try and see if I can someone...

I won't be marking this as solved though, as the problem still persists!
I do thank you for helping though. Just wish there was more I could try and do.

I understand Kraken.

Don't you even have 1 lousy USB flash drive (no need for a USB HDD)? Or write to a CD if you must :)
If you can, attach the file using the paperclip icon next to the smiley icon right above.

I won't post any more until you update the thread.
