Computer freezing while gaming

About 5 months ago I upgraded my computer with a new power supply and video card. It worked fine for about 3 months and since then it has been freezing. At first it actually froze completely, with a black screen and repeating noise from the speakers. This happened for a couple weeks and occurred randomly while gaming. Sometimes it happened 10 minutes into the game, sometimes 2 hours, etc. I debugged the issue by running a GPU test (furmark or something) and reading the logs but to no avail.

One day I came home to debug the issue, and after turning the PC the GPU fans were being extremely loud and I'm assuming were spinning at 100% speed. Also I wasn't able to get any display on my monitor just a black screen. I decided to to disconnect and reconnect the GPU because I wasn't sure what else to do. After powering back on the fans and display were fine so I decided to game for a while to see if it still froze. After testing for a week or so the result was the computer still froze while gaming but the whole pc didn't crash. Basically, I had to open task manager and click end task and it says this application is not responding. I posted a here a while ago and someone recommended I run memtest 86. It took a while but I finally got around to running memtest86 for about 5 hours straight, and it found nothing.

I finally ended up reformatting my hard drive as a last resort. I had never uninstalled my old gpu drivers before installing my new gpu so I fiigured that could of been the cause. After the reformat I continued to gaming for the past couple weeks with no issues. Granted, I probably only gamed 3 times for a couple hours each time. Then suddenly the computer froze again today. (This was the same as the freezing in the second paragraph. ie: game freezes but computer doesn't crash). I'm hoping someone here might have some insight on what it could be.

Also as you can see these crashes mostly have occurred played the steam game Divinity: Original Sin. It has been the game I've been playing most but it has crashed during Bioshock a couple times as well.

and read this ditty of mine

UsingHW Info PSU

Download HW Info and pick the right bit version - HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 -Download -(copyand paste this site into the search bar) If you donot need the running information in the smaller right hand panel close it. Inthe left hand window click on the + for the individual device groupings andthey will open out to the various components.

Go on opening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it and itwill highlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detailed descriptionof that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These are very detailedand are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

To get the PSU volts you need to select the Sensor button circled in yellow inthe pic for PSU testing do the same and scroll down the readout as in my pic towhere it has Nuvoton = yours might be a different section name / title. Postback apic of that please.

If you want a more definitive test see this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/301799-psu-test-dc-output-voltage.html but pleaseonly use a digital multimeter and not an analogue as they inject typically 9vinto a circuit to test and into a 3.3v or 5v rail - not a good idea!!see thepartial pic of the correct sort of meter in that tutorial. details if you scrolldown that listing.

I attempted to retrieve the dump files from C:\Windows\Minidump but I get a message saying Windows cannot find that directory. Do I have to enable the minidumps somehow?

I took a quick look at the more thorough test you suggest but I don't have a multimetre and I'm not sure i'd be competent enough to complete the test.

I'm going to take a look at the other article you linked tonight on voltage rails tonight as well. I figured I'd reply with my results as soon as possible and see if you had any other advice.

I'm really hoping I can get this issue resolved as I feel like I wasted 600 bucks on my GPU and PSU. Also I edited the main post to clarify that one time I turned the computer on and the GPU fans were super load and I had no display. I ended up opening the case and removing and then reattaching the graphics card. Somehow that resolved the issue but I don't understand how.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So I'm following Greg's suggestion and working through the troubleshooting steps. However, I'm currently stuck on the first step. I downloaded the ISO for Seagate HD and burned it to a CD. I then booted off the CD and the diagnostic tool opened up, but I was unable to move my mouse. I pressed enter on my keyboard to try and start the diagnostic tool since my mouse wasn't working and I then got a message saying no hard drive was found. So I'm not really sure where to go from here.

As for step 2, I've already downloaded and ran Memtest 86 previously and I had no errors. I'm not sure exactly how many passes I let it run - but I think it was at least 5 which took about 5 hours or so if I remember correctly.

For step 3 I had my friend look at my computer recently and he said everything looked like it was set up properly. By swapping RAM sticks do they mean use different RAM sticks, or do they mean moving the ram in slot 1 to slot 2 and vice versa?

For step 4 - Is Core Temp any different than the HwMonitor? Just wondering If I need to have another program to monitor temperatures or not. I will gladly download it if you guys think it would help.

Step 5- I already had Malware Bytes so this was pretty easy. I usually run it once a day and it hasn't found anything.

Step 6- I did try disabling my AV temporarily in a little while ago and the game still crashed. Do you think its worth uninstalling it? Or should I just disable protection temporarily and play games to test it out.

I'll continue with the other steps as soon as I have more free time.

Any comments or advice is appreciated.

With the RAM testing Darren it might be an idea - painful as it may be to run again and make sure it is at least 8 passes see pics and my ditty here

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html this one you will need to make abootable disk set the BIOS to optical(or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passes unless the errors come up straight away. Takesfair time to complete and some leave itrunning overnight.

NB

When you run the memtest ifthe errors come up straight away a in my pic then you will need to test each stick if you havemore than one and if it is only onethen test again in another slot because it could also be a fault on the board.

So for example two slots A & B /sticks 1 & 2 if the errors come up remove all sticks

Then try stick 1 in slot A if noerrors install stick 1 in slot B if no errors then install stick 2 inslot A if no errors then install stick 2in slot B. If there were errors to start with one of these combinations willhave to show errors.

Doing this will narrow down the problemslot as it could be the slot and not the stick or even a specific slot andstick combination. A lengthy process but only necessary if you get errors.

Question: Am I able to take a screenshot while running memtest or will I have to use my phone or something to take a pic? This is if I get errors of course.

Also does anyone know how I can get step one of Gregs Troubleshooting guide to work? I mentioned the issue I'm having in my last post and I've been unable to resolve it. I did however, run a Chkdsk and I'm assuming there were no errors because my computer rebooted when it was completed and there was no report of errors.

I'm slowly working my way through the steps.

For step 7 it says to uncheck everything in startup except AV? Does that mean Anti virus? Here is a pic of the only startup programs I have checked.

I'm thinking maybe I can skip this step because I just reformatted my computer a week ago and haven't really installed anything.

Step 8: No solutions

Step 9: I tried a system restore already with no luck. I also do not have any restore points that date back to before the freezing issue anymore.

Step 10: auto updating is enabled and I've installed all windows and gpu driver updates

Step 11: Latest display drivers are installed

I'll update with the rest of the steps soon. It seems like I can probably skip a bunch of them because I just reformatted and still have the same problem. Let me know what you guys think. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of this soon.

Did you configure Windows to create minidumps?

You have a ton of useless items in your msconfig Startup. Why would you think they should be let run to spy on you and use resources when they are not needed at all? I would uncheck all except Avast. Then do the same in Services tab after checking the box to Hide All MS Services.

Please explain the problem with Step 1? What make of hard drive do you have? You can google the serial number under Disk drives in msconfig or System Information to find the brand. Then use the diagnostics provided for that brand from Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

gregrocker - I honestly didn't think any of that stuff was spyware. I was assuming they were all legit since they are all intel and nvidia and I haven't downloaded anything on this computer besides anti virus and gpu drivers. I will uncheck them all except Avast as you said.

How did you burn the Seatools ISO to CD? Try WIndows Image Burner or Download ImgBurn 2.5.7.0 - FileHippo.com

I used Windows Image burner and I clicked the checkbox to verify the image was correctly burned.

Another note. The actual freezing issues seems to happen very randomly and not very often. For instance I've been playing the Divinity: Original Sin for 2+ hours tonight with no issues. Not sure if this helps you guys diagnose the issue. But I find it strange that it seems so random.

Do you have UEFI BIOS? Look at Disk Mgmt to see if there's a EFI System partition. If so set BIOS to CSM to allow Legacy BIOS boot.

Try bootable test again.

Try running installed Seatools then. If possible slave the HD to another PC so System Files aren't running.

Darren mate just take pics with a digital camera and snip the image put it in pictures then add it to your post using manage attachments (below your post).

The Avast do as Greg says but I would be carful with it because up until a week ago it was using an add on that was sending info back to their base!

Forgot to mention what Greg has said slaving the drive to another machine you can either install it or use the USB to SATA adaptor - I find the latter so handy saves pulling the second machine apart to do what you want with the drive you are having trouble with see pic

Yep Greg I discovered it by chance a while ago and it has been worth every cent I paid for them - have two one is an el cheapo and a bit broken, and it saved my sanity many a time using it on IDE drives.

Okay, so I ran Memtest86 over night for 9 passes total and I got 0 errors. So I'm going to assume my RAM is alright unless 2 Memtests and the Windows Diagnositics both missed errors.

gregrocker - Not sure if I have a UEFI BIOS. Is Disk Mgmt an option in the BIOS? I can try the SeaTools for sure instead as well. Update: Nevermind, I found a tutorial here:
BIOS Mode - See if Windows Boot in UEFI or Legacy Mode
And it looks like I have a Legacy BIOS. So I guess I'm stuck using SeaTools instead of the bootable CD.

ICit2lol - Thanks for the tips. I didn't end up taking a pic because I had 0 errors luckily hehe.

Unfortunately, I only have the one PC and I'm not even sure how to set a Slave up. Although it may be a good learning experience for me. I'm a bit clumsy though so I don't 100% trust myself with hardware stuff right now. For instance, when removing my GPU last time I forgot about the motherboard retaining clip (or w/e its called) and when I found it I pushed it in the wrong direction and snapped it lol. So my GPU is just held in by the 2 screws now.

Going to go check the BIOS now and If I can't figure it out I'll run SeaTools instead and post the results.
